A good lurchers like another pair of hands but farmers are funny folk just agree with them and walk on

well done mate very true.a pro should have all the tools of the trade to tackle all situations,there wont be 1 pro ferret company or person that wont take the lurcher if the conditions allow.example.you just netted up and entered ferret when farmer comes over to have a chat and a rabbit hit the net and slips it and run across field,then one comes out a missed pop hole again away.and so on .you may look a right tit.if the dogs thier doing its job you would look like you knew what your doing.and stubby (all the gear no idea)ive been ferreting a 20 yrs more than you fella.stick to doing peoples gardens with your 40 ferrets and 20 purse nets son.

its your use of the word pro, that has everyone laughing, as it seems your implying one cannot be a "pro" ferreter unless they have a dog, where as most are seeing the word "pro" as someone who gets paid for doing a job, in which case, then I can include myself in that, Im a pestie, that gets paid, wether it be rabbits,pigeon, or city stuff (insects/rodents) yes I have a dog, well a few in fact, but they dont come out ferreting on every occassion, as not all jobs warrant it,

 

good luck to you if you'vre been ferreting that long, but please dont tar everyone as being non pro ferreters, for not taking a dog along to each and every rabbit job.

A marking dog is a must or it just becomes a ball ache

 

if the farmer doesnt like the idea of the dog on i wont go, but then again its my hobby not my job.

not everyone uses a dog, one of my permissions is a large estate and while ferreting one morning on a long hedgerow 3 blokes approached me and asked where i'd done on telling them that i was working the way to the river off they went to a big hedgerow that must be800/900 yds long they had no marking dog with them just long nets they just blanket netted the hedge starting at one end and moving the nets as they went along as i was walking off the land they had a good bag of rabbits, but i prefer to watch a dog work each to there own i suppose

Me and my mate are just in from a days ferreting a huge pice of ground we ferreted every burrow my dog marked and she was 100% right i tried some she walked past but they where empty .Its not just a pro ferreter that need a good lurcher

If I was a pro i would be more concerned that I laid a net badly and missed a bolt hole or that i didnt use the long net like a sensible person.

 

Also - would you say that some one was not a pro if they didn't have a shotgun license?

I dont think you need a dog with you but some times I bring my dog just to boult a few rabbits for just for the sport of it also I find it alot easier to get new land if I dont have a dog with me

people above have already said what i think in regards to the need for a lurcher to be a pro ferreter,, i know someone who happily used a collie and a pest controler who uses terriers, but some perfer to use only nets, quieter and less obvious to public and some places are unsafe for a dog
