Thats a stupid comment mate. Owning a running dog has f**k all to do with how good a ferreter you are. I've met some complete idiots with lurchers and some VERY good ferreters without.

Sorry mate, but your comment about only being a real pro of you've got a lurcher is one of the daftest comments I've ever read on here..   You are not a professional of anything unless you get paid

Aye   Not a "pro ferreter" without a lurcher !!!!!!!!!!!!!! how old are you mate,,,,11 maybe ??? total bollocks.

yes true but if your were a professional a dog is a must.lots of good ferreters out there but a dog makes the team .

Still sounds a bit off mate. Whilst MOST professional ferreters may have a running dog, not having one does not stop you being a pro ferreter. If ferreting is your professional game a running dog only accounts for a very small percentage of your catch. A MARKING dog however IS a real bonus, perhaps a MUST. Was this what you meant? As Chalky also points out some will shake their heads at the thought of a dog on their land and some land is VERY unsuitable for working a dog (i.e motor way embankments, round-abouts etc), but while working there you are still a professional ferreter if thats why you were called in.

In short - don't judge a mans professional ability by his proximity to a juk.

You are not a professional of anything unless you get paid, look up the definition of the word...

..and personally if I had to choose one type of dog as a ferreting team it would be a good terrier. Yes a lurcher can mark, but a terrier's been bred to find quarry down holes...

PS. Not saying some lurcher's can't do it as good as terriers, just speaking generally.
