bull x killing pups

Recommended Posts

would it be possible for a vet to give the calcium injection as a preventative measure immediately after whelping in breeds like ebt that are prone to this condition or would it do more harm than good?

ive never had the misfortune of this in a recently whelped bitch but i have seen it in dairy cattle.

thought i d write about the last week of hassle with my bitch and hope it might save you losing a few pups yourself.she had the pups last monday the 23rd.she showed the signs of labour as normal ie restlessness, nesting and panting.in about 6 hours she had given birth to 9 pups.after the birth she was panting a bit but nothing different to any bitches i ve seen before whelping.she had access to water all the way through and seemed to settle down nicely.i checked on her every hour throughout the day and she just looked knackered.the night after the birth about 3 in the morning i woke to my terriers going mental and could hear faint cries. now the kennels are away from the house and i could still hear pups screaming.I ran down the kennels to find she had killed 3 pups and had taken half the face off the fourth which was the one screaming. i had no choice than to humanely put the pup out of its misery as there was no way on this earth it would survive. the bitch was sat in the corner growling showing her teeth to the other pups. i took her straight off the pups and cleared up the mess from the pups she had killed. At 4 in the morning the vet was nt over keen on coming out and said to wait till surgery at 9 , useless twats.i told her i suspected calcium defficiency and that she needed a calcium injection. she suggested muzzling the bitch and putting her back in.and they wonder why i have no time for them.there s one cracking vet there i normally see but he was on holiday.anyway took her up and had her x rayed to check for any dead pups then eventually i persuaded them to jab her with calcium.she calmed down within 4 to 6 hours and i put her back with her pups but sat with her just in case.

f*****g HELL!!

And they say vets do their job because the love to help!! hahaha Do you not mean they love the f*****g money!`

i know lol.the jab costs around 6 quid. but because i took her in and they x rayed her and jabbed her i was nobbled for £150 and was in and out in 15 mins.they ve got you by the bollocks in situations like this.he prescribed diazapam first to sedate her a bit. but i would nt have any of it. it would pass to the pups and make them drowsy and not want to feed and she would nt be able to stimulate to piss.after i told him this he said maybe your right. i have complained and have my bill reduced and some free hills biscuits and meat for the bitch.it always pays to question there judgement i think

yes it can be given after whelping or as someone said earlier you could give it orally. but giving it to the lead up to the birth can cause eclampsia so its just wait and watch the bitch after she s given birth. sometimes it can be up to a week after.it put s you on edge afterwards and i watched her for a week afterwards every 2 hours cos she still had a little grumble which was probably nothing but i aint losing no more . it was a mating off my old dog and there s only 1 dog pup left and its a dog i want to keep back. the cow killed the one i liked lol shit happens i suppose.i ll be glad when they re weaned and i can get a full nights kip

I've experienced it twice with bull terriers. Identical symptoms to what you are saying. I can remember being given calcium in a liquid form (may have been after she was jabbed at vets),to which i syringed several mil in the dams mouth whenever things looked to be going wrong with her. It's so long ago that i cannot recall everything.

Good luck...............

thats right but it s hard to get hold of it now think it was called collo cal or something similar

Collo cal D, a good vet should prescribe it before whelping to a known bitch

they said they have nt used it in a couple of years so don t stock it. it would have taken a few days to come in. the vet which i normally deal with would have been down my house in ten mins and jabbed her. i did comment to the vet when she came into the surgery about not wanting to get her arse out of bed but she said there was no need as the bitch had been removed at that time . i won t write what my reply was but she did well up when i shouted
