Out ferreting today

With all the rain over the last week i wasnt sure id get out this weekend so hadnt really arranged anything, got up and cleaned the ferrets out and decided id go for a couple of hours so I rang the farmer and said id be round soon. I took 3 jills with me, one older one and 2 of this years young, wickdiweasel if you are reading this you might recognise them lol

 

I arrived about 12 o clock and just took the longnets with me because i was on my own doing a warren out in the open field that me and a mate had done about 4 weeks ago and got 23 out of, I just wanted to run through it once more to make sure i had taken out what i could

I ran the nets round and put one of the younguns and the more experienced one in

 

 

 

Almost straight away i got a bolt

 

 

 

I put the other ferret in about 10 minutes later as i felt they were getting the run around and in the next half an hour i had 5 more, 2 of the ferrets started coming up more and more regularly but of the sandy jill no sign so i put them 2 away and gave it about half hour before getting the locator box out, i got a fix at 4 foot and started digging, taking it easy as the young jill had never been dug too before

 

 

 

The mark turned out to be absolutely spot on... i am starting to like the MK3 more and more , i broke through right into the tube, you can see the rabbit and the ferret is just the other side of the spade

 

 

 

I pulled the rabbit out, it had been mauled a bit but was still alive so i despatched it and the ferret dissapeared back down the tube once i had taken the rabbit and popped out one of the holes nearby

 

 

 

After that i called it a day i had only been out a couple of hours and was pleased with the 7 rabbits,

Good on ye, Nathan. I enjoyed that. I only wish I'd ever had the balls to get involved in Long Nets myself - I'm sure it would have saved me days!

 

One thing though, mate - and this is the gods honest truth; As soon as that first picture rolled down there, I thought to myself, " That bury needs a Hob! " Something with the nice, steady nature. Determination and strength to be a real room clearer. Perhaps I was right too, eh?

 

Bury of that size, with just one jill and a couple of youngsters? A hold up was inevitable, wouldn't you say?

 

I always like to panic the rabbits ~ couple of dozen holer? I'd use a couple of jills and a hob. Get the buggers flustered. Every where they turn there's ferret stink. Then, after a nice salvo of bunnies, wait by as that big old bugger pushes out the hiders - as he'd have taken care of that one the jill was having bother with.

 

Too many people 'poo poo' a strong, slower ferret. I love 'em! Those rabbits have no where to go but round in circles and he'll find them in the end. Especially with the jills keeping them moving

 

Long nets save the 'netting'. But a hob in there would have saved the landscaping. And in that good ol' Hampshire chalk 'n flint, that was a godsend!

We used a couple of hobs last time and you re right that did get them moving but because of the ease of digging i was happy to take the 2 young jills, its all experience for them and i like to get them started using the longnets so they can come and go as they please without getting the collars snagged in purse nets, I guarantee if you give longnets a go you ll never look back, since i started using them in just looking for excuses not to use purse nets

 

Stevie the hedgerows you can see in the second and third picture both in the field im in and the ones in the distance beyond the farm buildings need doing yet so it is a nice break doing them open sets
