FERRETBOY 680
how far of the ground does the bottom line have to be. rew the bottom line as with all nets needs to be on the floor for it to work properly i was thinking that but in the pic the bottom line looks like its off the ground.i was alsothinking would it be alright tovuse a wire as a toggle like a slider on a purse net but made from a fencing kind of wire. good hunting rew Edited December 10, 2006 by REW Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
REW, you could probably get away with using the slider's that you will have seen on rabbit purse nets. You would probably get away with using rings also..... as long as that net purses Quote Link to post

Perhaps you could have a go at making one to your own spec and let us know how the results faired Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL MOLECATCHER , I HAVE IN THE PAST HAD A FEW HARES IN THE GATE NET , AND LIKE YOU I WAS PRIVALIGED TO GET VERY INFORMATIVE PMs FROM THE SNAREMAN , DESCRIBEING HIS METHOD OF GATE NETTING WHICH HAS SET ME IN GOOD STEAD ............. TO BE HONEST THE MANS KNOWLEDGE IS FAR REACHING AND EVEN THOUGH IVE BEEN NETTING FOR A GOOD WHILE I CAN TRUELY SAY HIS PMs HAVE IMMENSELY HELPED ME UNLIKE YOU I HAVENT HAD THE PLEASURE OF A LOOK AT " THE " GATENETTING VIDEO , ............. BUT FROM THE PICTURES OF YOURS IT SEEMS THAT THE SLIDERS ARE STRAIGHT SIDED ? , WOULD IT NOT CAUSE THE SLIPPING OF THE MESHES ? , BY THE LOOKS I WOULD HAVE MAYBE GONE FOR A SHAPE LIKE AN ELONGATED FIGURE EIGHT THAT WAY THE END WILL HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO COME OFF HAVE YOU USED THE WIRE SLIDERS MOLECATCHER ? , IF SO HOW DO YOU FIND THEM ? ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
This is way below your league gentleman but an old boy I knew, worked a set made from a 15ft cut off long net section which had no top or bottem line or poles .The net was mearly draped over the middle of the gate [along the rungs]and trailed on the floor infront with slight bagging below the gate .We bowled many hares with this but by christ they took a bit of untangling as the hare took the net well past the gate before becoming hopelessly tangled .His lurcher was nearly as old as he was ,it seemed :11: and never chased a hare or rabbit that I saw but merely worked the feild thoroughly before standing infront the net ,something which is sadly lost to the lurcher world today in most cases .The ability to work a net was taken for granted then .I could see the short fallings of this set but could never persuade him to improve it .On a windy day /night the set was useless as it blew down .I once talked him into tying the top with cotton on a windy night and we caught 3 hares but that was never repeated as he was very set in his ways . The set you use now is a vast improvement .Fair play and good hunting . Quote Link to post
snareman 3
looks like a good set up. never had a go at netting the hare's yet but i know of some good bit's i may just make one up out of hemp or spun nylon, but use it in the fixed pole method. then if you have more than one hare wanting the gate way, you may just get them both. Have you ever pursed up two hare's at the same time? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh moley , give me a pm or a phone and i,ll tell you all you need to know about gate netting ; i was schooled in this night game since i was a school boy , i,ll tell you all the different killsets and how to avoid detection , and where to avoid at certain times of the year , gw. pegandgun 52
I was lucky enough to be taught the art of gate netting by Snareman many years ago(thanks old yen).He showed me many tricks that helped put 100s of hares into the nets.He is the true master of the net and the snare.Ive also got to thank Duckwing who recently knitted me two excellent hare sheet nets made of hemp and knitted with square mesh which ide never done until Duckwing showed me . Molecatcher, i noticed that you used hazel sticks to hold your net in position.Hawthorn sticks with the bark stripped off are far better and very hard and strong and thinner than the hazel in your photo.I use very thin steel bar with a bend at the top to hold the nets up when the ground is really hard. All these tricks and tips where shown to me by Snareman years ago. If it wasnt for snareman us English boys would still be 35 years hehind the Scottish boys, all us trappers and net lads owe old Snereman a big thankyou Quote Link to post
