Bit of crow bashing before work.

Recommended Posts

Up at the crack o dawn again to go up the farm to see how many crows I could get this morning. On approaching my usual spot I disturbed a young fox sniffing about the barn where I put the dead birds in,me thinks Mr.fox is using this barn as his personal buffet.

Well i decided to try somewhere else to postion my makeshift hide of a pallett with the top strap of wood removed so I could stick my gun through, and my camo net threw over the top .Not the most natural looking ,but its workin so can't complain.set it up about 15 to 20 yds from cowpen wall where crows usually start landing about 6 am.Right on que the "swarm" arrived circling overhead checking all was clear before landing on wall.in a line of about 20 long right in front of me.Descisions ,descisions on what bird to go for, went for 1 that presented its head to me and ppssst ,dumph pellet went right through birds skull hitting barn 10 meteres behind. All birds scattered except one nosey bugger who kept looking down at his fallen comrade, wondering what the hell just happened to him ,after a quick reload on the now smooth loading s16 this jackdaw soon got the exact same thing happen to it.Pellet straight through head. The bird stayed on wall ,then wobbled like a drunk tramp eating chips oot a bin then clattered off wall landing next to crow he was so interested in.

I moved to retrieve birds after things went quiet, just as i was making my way back to hide the birds started coming in to land on wall of cowpen again.I didn't have time to get back so leant against a post and took aim at chest of jackdaw on far wall, ppsssst ,dumph ,cawww ,bird shot up in air landing behind wall. I shot it in chest because so far with the small jackdaw I have found this to kill them cleanly without fuss, cos once or twice birds shot right in head have twitched and writhed before dying, dunno if this is just nerves or what.Just as I was aiming again at few remaining birds I felt a hotness and movement on the inside of my leg.I froze fearing it was a rat  ,looked down and it was only a bloody great big cow sticking its head through bars next to post and licking my leg :tongue4: . And the wife wonders why I get up so early to go shooting :icon_redface: needless to say I missed birds I was aiming for.

WEent into barn next that is used as a temporary dump to try zeroing my laser again and to peer through missing slat to see if there was any woodpigeons on other side in trees. No such luck ,but there was a lone crow on Barn roof some 30 yds away next to the one That is still up there from yesterday, they are obviously not as bothered about body up there as they were. Anyway this bird was dispatched quicky and fell to ground doing a wee tumble aka Frank Spencer.

Decided to call it quits for the day and started gathering mu net and decoys and gunbag when I noticed a feral pigeon on a a barn roof facing the opposite direction to me.This gave me time to manouvere into position as there was bales of hay and a wall in front of me.It was prob 35 to 40 yds not quite 45 degrees.I held over about a half inch and went for it.pssst ,thwack and a flurry of feathers and bird fell to floor. went to see where i shot it and was surprised to see it hobble around heading for a gate into field. Reloaded another pellet and took a kneeling shot to put it out its misery.I had shot it in the back of the neck the 1st time, given time it would have been fatal but obviously dissapointed not a clean kill .second shot was but.
