hargreavesheber 93
Thinking of getting my 1st lurcher and have had no real previous experience with the different mixes. I am hoping to hunt rabbits in small to medium fields in my local area, Lancashire. Seen 1st cross Whippet/Greyhound on net. Sire is a 22" working whippet and Dam is a ex track greyhound 25". oppinions on this cross please. All advice welcome ON other options.... CHEERS. Quote Link to post
Chid 6,621
good cross for rabbits imo what type of ground ou going to be running your dog on if its rough ground you might be best off looking for a collie x or beddy x whippet Quote Link to post
Rory4 267
thats what i got for the bunnies only 8months so not done anything yet, small fields my way so need be quick Quote Link to post
hargreavesheber 93
Well grounds def not like a bowling green round here but not like ploughed fields either. Whats your main concern? Bone/feet structure or?? Does a beddy or collie give better bone/skin type? Quote Link to post
brunty29cdo 5
pretty much any half decent working lurcher/longdog will catch you rabbits.but personally if your working smaller fields id use a smaller dog.grey/whippet will do the job good enuff as any but you may wanna think about something with good feet, coat etc. Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
Considering this cross myself like sh@t off a shovel, but may edge towards border collie/greyhound cross whippet, bit more sensible and less injury prone....easy to train....maybe chuck some bedlington in there too. Big bald beautiful 1,231
Got a pup that will be used on simalar fields, small cow fields, sports grounds etc. sire is my whippet and dam is mainly whippet with a spot of saluki, should be ideal. fast but with better feet and maybe a touch more stamina Quote Link to post
Chid 6,621
some whippet x greys can be a bit thin skinned and can have feet that are easy knocked up . (i used to have one 7/8s grey 1/8 whippet she was spot on) not all are like this takes you to look at the parents see how they are.. Quote Link to post
hargreavesheber 93
The main concern wi u guys would be feet and thin skin with the whippet/grey cross,? would i be right in thinking. Does collie in there help improve these issues and brain power?. So many mixes. Do pure whippets have feet and skin issues too? cheers Edited August 27, 2010 by hargreavesheber Quote Link to post
Chid 6,621
some can not all do ... mike brown whippets are meant to be good ... Quote Link to post
brunty29cdo 5
collie blood would certainly give it brain power, coat and good feet. id go for a broken coat 3/4 whippet/beddy myself.but thats just my opinion. Quote Link to post
hargreavesheber 93
well thats given me plenty to think about. Maybe whippet/greyhound isn't the ideal cross. carry on searching me thinks...Cheers folks Quote Link to post
