While out having a mooch on wednesday evening one of the dogs came out of some heavy cover and sat down.... Istopped looked back at her, turned to my mate and said, have you seen this. She never behaves in this way. SO knew there was something wrong. As i made my way back to her she then lay down on her side. She was breathing very irratically and quite floppy. I noticed a wasp stuck to her eye lid!! after pulling it off, loftie and i began to check through her rough coat for more. There were a cpl on her back, one on the her leg, and one buried deep in her fur on the top of head!!

How many others she had taken we will never know. It really kicked the shit out of her, and for a while she couldnt walk or get her breath! She never made a sound! This effected her more than anything i have seen before, she has had things hanging of her face, nose etc. And never realy bothered her..

It took her all night to get over it. Once home she was given a good painkiller and in the morning she was ok, but boy did they flatten her.. A few more and who knows what would have happened, could have easily gone in to a fit, as i think she was in shock for quite some time...

wasp stings are,nt good for a dog, i can remember i had a terrier stung, and he collapsed on me and was not right for a good couple of days, im not sure if you can give them antihistamin,?

thats handy to know, can we give them what we take or would it have to come from vet?,ive lost ferrets to jasper stings as well, poor little fellas, in the summer i fede them when its dark so the meat does,nt attract them.

Can give them what we have,.....Dogs are quite resiliant to tablets... But dont go giving them morphine, lol.

1/2 a Piriton for terriers and small lurchers. A whole one for big lurchers. You can also get the liquid version which is absorbed through the stomach wall a bit quicker. Carry it with you at all times: saved my dogs' lives a few times though I've never had one actually go into anaphylactic shock completely: dog would be dead within minutes if that was the case. Hate wasps!

one year about 5yrs ago we had a population explosion of wasps here, i got stung and wasps usually leave me alone, my dad was stung bout 20times but he does hate them with a passion, dogs, horses + a cat got stung as well, never seen owt like it, i made a wasp trap in a large coke bottle with cola, jam, fizzy orange + 2wks later i went to look at the trap, it was 3/4 full of dead, dying + a few live wasps, needless to say i made another trap + put the lid on the other one, hated wasps myself ever since, antihistamines are always kept nearby in case of any insect sting or allergic reaction in me or my dogs

[/quote} Similar thing just happened to me last week on a walk. Knew where a nest of wasps was so i stay clear of it but this day the pup decided he would run over to it and stand right above it :wallbash: . He was soon of a running but falling down biting at himself. Flicked a few off him but i think the heavy coat saved him from a few stings. He got 1 in the back leg that gave him a limp all the way home, so i fed them and put them in the kennel. Checked in a couple of hours and he was fine, just a tiny swelling where the had been stung. He never let out a yelp either which i was suprised about since he is only young

Quick question.........this wasps nest was underground, is that unusual? I thought they suspended nest off the ground... :hmm:

Oh and it was defo' wasps and not bees

you would need to be rather thick to not tell the diffrence between a bee and a wasp lab lol

oh and it dont matter if its uderground or hanging from a tree they will swarm and attack the b*****ds.when i was 12 i jumped on a tyre and the dike was inside the rim.at 1st i thought i was getting stung by nettles until i looked down.they were all over me stinging like f**k.managed to scramble away and luckily a guy and his wife stopped in their car.i was in a bad way apparently.i had been stung all over.they pulled my jumper off asnd they were flyimg out from underneath and in my hair.down took me to the hospital and i got an injection and kept in over night.dr said i was a lucky a lad.cant stand them and kill them on sight. At his time of the year they are dying off and at times you will see them crawling about at night in the house.always check my bed in the summer cause the bedroom windows openmost of the day.glad your dog was ok mate.i might start carrying something of those remedys next year just in case.i tend to wander pretty far and in remote areas with the dog.

One of my kelpie bitches is allergic to wasp or bee stings, or both, and on one occasion her head ballooned up leaving her looking like an English bull terrier.

Conversely, a kelpie/collie x greyhound I had once dug up an underground wasps' nest and was covered by a swarm of them. I'd heard that if you travel far enough they'll leave you alone so I took off my jacket, ran into the middle of the swarm, wrapped the dog up in the jacket and ran like mad. After about a hundred yards or so they'd stopped so I put him down, shook out the jacket (to dislodge several wasps from the pockets) and then we both ran off as the dislodged ones weren't too happy about it. All this without me getting a single sting and no ill effects to Moss...

Half an hour later, I put my hand in my pocket to get out the dog lead or something and was stung by one solitary wasp! Little sod!

my dogs got attacked by a good few wasps a few weeks back,i was out walking them and i chucked a stick for them to chase as the stick landed and the dogs got to it i could see them all starting to jump about and yelp a lil bit so i called them over and they had about 5 or 6 wasps on each of them,i started to remove and kill them but this just seemed to make it worse as more were coming so i started running away calling the dogs and after about 200m they were gone so i checked the dogs coats for any more and made my way home. all the dogs were fine after it but i pooped my load lol. atb tyson
