jf1970 328
hi all,my 5 mth old lurcher pup has shown no interest in retreiving for the last 10 days, she was about % on this up until this time, her sit and stay is good, recall is good and her retrieving was good aswell up to this point, she was retrieving in an open field, long grass and semi thick cover but she will do none now, when i throw dummy she will go and find but won't pick up and retrieve,i have tried changing the dummy, different field and i have even went back to basics,it's so frustrating, she did 1 retrieve for me last night but showed no interest after that and i did notice that a few of her teeth are missing/loose as she is teething, should i leave retrieving for a while?cheers......john Quote Link to post
stomdog 2
Give her a break mate and then go back to basics and make sure you reward her with her favorite treat Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
She is probably in the middle of teething: when a pup is losing its milk teeth and growin adult teeth their gums can become quite sore. Also, it is a mistake to do too much retrieving training at an early age. Less is more when it comes to retrieving unless you have an obsessive retriever: some Collie types are like this. Lay off the retrieving until she has finished getting her adult teeth through (or use a very soft and light weight object) and then don't do more than one retrieve per session. Look at it from the dog's point of view: when its learning something if it does it well the first time, why go on and on doing the same thing over and over again? Many sighthound types get bored very quickly with this. When you do a retrieve, try and make the job more interesting: like changing the type of article you want the dog to bring to you: I vary between balls, socks, plastic bottles: all sorts of things. Don't use furry dummies until after the pup has matured a bit as they usually want to go off and chew an old rabbit skin! Also, try hiding the object in as many different places as you can; this makes it more fun for the pup as she has to use her nose to find it. Don't make it too difficult to begin with until she knows what she's looking for. Quote Link to post
