When buying rimfire ammo?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for clearing that up, lads. On my application though, do I put vermin control and zeroing?

Cheers

No need, "zeroing" is not a legal reason to hold a firearm.

Yes in my experience, hunting and target are legitimate reasons but your FAC needs to be conditioned for all use, zeroing is another use which is NOT hunting or target. Some regions may put this down as standard but it is not a good thing to "expect" anything, if you want it ask for it!

I can assure the OP and anyone else for that matter, you will not get an FAC granted for "zeroing". The zeroing clause is standard across *all* forces, and if for some reason the force has not put it on the firearm conditions of use, they have made an error, which when pointed out, they will be happy to correct their mistake.

"Zeroing" is an essential part of using a rifle. I would say that if for some reason a police force tried to prevent it for any reason, they would be placing an unfair condition on the certificate holder, as they would effectively be prevented from using the rifle at all if they are not allowed to "zero" by shooting at paper targets.

Of course, there's no right of appeal for conditions on certificates, only if they decline completely, a fact that some forces will use to make things difficult for the holder!

When it comes to the moderator, do I just put rifle with moderator next to .22RF, or do I need to fill out a new slot and reason for owning.

Cheers

Needs it's own slot, so:

.22RF Rifle - Vermin

Moderator for .22RF - Vermin

.243 Rifle - Deer/Fox and other legal quarry

Moderator for .243 - Deer/Fox and other legal quarry

A lot of people put Health & Safety or similar as a reason for a moderator but all mine (.22,.17HMR,.223 & .243) were granted with me just putting the same reason that I put for the rifle.

You do need a separate slot for a moderator but I think most FLO's treat the reason as obvious.

All .22lr subsonic ammo is is hollow point plain lead - ie "expanding". Ammo for .22lr is simply not a question. The same rounds are used for field and target. As for club/target use with other calibres, you can legally use expanding ammo BUT most clubs insist on factory FMJ for competition so that every shooter is on equal terms. If you get your FAC for field use that includes range shooting for zeroing, for which you can use field ammo.

Ric, I'm a little confused by the first line, are you saying all .22lr Subsonic is HP??

Err.....The same rounds are used for field and target .....which round would that be that both field and target boys use?

This may well be another regional thing, but you do not get zeroing entered automatically in every region, so best to ask for it up front! Hopefully most FEO would steer candidates in this direction during the interview.
