CarraghsGem 92
seen a lurcher yesterday evening, saluki-deerhound-greyhound, hes like a big racy hairy saluki to look at, this dog catches everything live;- pheasent, rabbit etc, caught a young fallow deer doe calf, saw her in the stable, fine young thing, same size as the dog, not a mark on her. ive never seen a dog catch large prey live! i know his dam, she used to bring down deer easily pre-ban, his sire is i believe a coursing dog. also this dog has never been sent after fox, owners afraid it would be brought back live anyone ever see a dog like this? catching live like this? obviously he cant retrieve prey this size but he holds it till owner gets there Edited August 21, 2010 by CarraghsGem Quote Link to post

Guest Buttermilk
Our Lurcher bitch, Misty does this all the time, with everthing. Unfortunately. My ex-husband liked all our Lurchers to be very soft mouthed and she is exceptionally so. I don't like it because she will bring everything back live to hand....and I'm not really into killing things. I really love to watch the dogs work but I'm not too keen on the despatching bit. I ride every day, cross country and in pretty remote areas... and she has frequently dragged a fox out of cover. She has done this with muntjac too, but can't carry them as far...she just holds them until I tell her to 'leave'. They never have a mark on them, she doesn't break the skin and is always very pleased with herself...I let them run off (sorry to all you massive hunting chaps). I think all her litter brothers went to be 'fox dogs'...but she just mooches about really. Oh, the only thing she doesn't bring back 'live' is mink. I think it's because they fight back hard and she just gets really mad..she's usually incredibly placid, but goes 'bananas' whenever she encounters a mink...really loses her head. Quote Link to post

Guest Buttermilk
But then you'd have to kill them all yourself...! It's worse when my daughter is with us , she runs off and won't come back until the 'situation' has been resolved! Another thing she does is, search the garden for frogs and hedgehogs..then she carries them very gently into the kitchen. What a freak! Edited to add...Misty not my daughter.
