Cheers Craig. go to college and get qualified if you are lucky by that time the economy may have picked up and there may be some jobs but to be honest at the moment it will be hard work getting any where and then if you do get a job you will spend half the year wishing you hadn't Quote Link to post

I notice that you are 21 years old, so probably past the 'volunteering for a year' scenario. I would wait untill the shooting season, and if you are doing nothing better go beating as many days as you can on as many local shoots as possible (only big shoots with the possibility of new staff). If after the season a job comes up, you may have a decent shout at it. Help out the keepers in any way you can and they should return the favour. At 21 and in todays economic climate, I would say you are possibly over the hill for a gamekeeping college education. It would probably be of little benefit to you. Experience is key, and knowing the right people is crucial. FTB Quote Link to post

FTB Sorry your right I am just having a shitty day with the birds carrying 4 ton of pellet out in the pissing rain and wind does that to you I am afraid that the truth is there are not many jobs about even experienced lads are finding it hard to give you an idea a mate of mine put an advert in the shooting times for a beat keeper after 2 days and over 160 cv's through his door he started to bin his post after a week he had over 450 replies some of the lads as applied where better qualified than my mate and he is headkeeper. I am not trying to put you off just being realistic about the opportunity out there what I would add is that you could put a call into Helen Benson at the NGO she would be the best person to give you any advice on a keepering career Quote Link to post
perthshire keeper 1,239
as the rest have said its bloody gloomy world. ime only keepering because i worked very hard on my work placement and the asked me to stay fulltime. without this i dont think i would have found a job. before you get to into it like going to collage of helping out every where for free, realy and i mean realy think about this. working on your own for a long time, its ok at first even the first few years but belive me after 3-4 years its depressing. next to no sociol life because all summer your knee deep in shit bits and feed. all winter your neck deep in mud feed and mad italians intent on shooting sparrows. wages are so poor it hurts, i have been hear 3and a half years now and i get 120 a week,i have to buy most of my own ammo and dog feed to working almost every day about 15 days off a year includeing christmas and holiday, almost dawn till dusk then lamping 3 nights a week. almost every keeper i ask says if he could take his time agen he wouldent be a keeper!(lindsey waddle not included) what ime trying to say is its not all shooting digging and tips its shit shite and wet. go to collage newton rigg will take you on a first diploma course. get a good placement, come hear if you want on placement. get a fac sg and clean driveing licence and you will be well on your way to becomeing a keeper. sorry to sound all gloomy all the best Quote Link to post
ad22 1
I think college is a good route in even at 21 i went at 22 and its a good stepping stone even if you dont learn much its a good reason to get a work placement and hopefully you will get in that way, i did, although there wasnt a job for me at the end of my placement the headkeeper wanted to take me on but upper managament wouldnt have it but he got me a job elsewhere single handed position with nice house, big yard, 3 vehicles etc. and great beat that is mine, far better than i could have hoped for. Has been a steep learning curve but its great, if you want it enough you go get it, just dont give up or feel negative about it, keep trying and you will get there. Quote Link to post
