Shamo 319
I am a bit old fashioned and a bit tight too, out of necessity. The Bellman and Flint Locators I have been told are good. I have a problem with somebody using an already established idea, mixing with it a little and asking more than the original actually costs. The B&F Locators are the Pieps Avalanche ones, which have been around for decades, the Collar has been made smaller, but the idea and mechanics are the same. They can be bought, as is, from the Web cheaper than the B&F ones. I know a good Terrier is worth it's weight in Gold, which is the sales pitch for these Locators, but there is that little niggle inside me about the ethics of the B&F guys. I am not totally inflexible though and would use one if it was the 'Dogs Bollox'. The new Deben mark 3, that is around £200 with one Collar and most guys should always have two Collars. As you can see it is up there in price with the Pieps one. Which is the superior one? I have the mark 1 Deben Boxes and Collars and often get interference from buried Fence Wire and Metal in the general area I am trying to 'mark'. Power Lines overhead also cause problems. The combination of the interference and wind and rain makes digging to a Dog 'interesting' to say the least. Obviously both Locator systems have far more range than anything so far, the mark 3 having around 40 feet range and the B&F around the same in digging range. I do not want to spend my money twice and have to try to get rid of one or the other. I am considering getting more spares for my mark 1 Locators, but won't if my money can be spent better elsewhere. Anybody got any thoughts on either of these Locator systems and are they Miles apart from the mark 1 Deben? I know this may have been asked before, but fresh opinions would be gratefully recieved, especially as both have probably been used quite extensively by now, especially the B&F one. bill88 6
Did this place with the bandf, but could have done it by ear,lol Quote Link to post
hafod 1
shamo.save your money and get a b+f,as poacher said, they wont pick up in a metal pipe, but iff unlike me you read the write up you have with it in detail,it explains this,..have heard of one other incident where overhead pylons interfered with one, apart from that ,using one myself and other lads i know, they certainly are the way forward...havent used a mk3,so i can"t comment on that..mk 1 were ok,but iff i added up all the money over the years that i have spent on collars and the odd box,i could of easily bought a b+f and had change..read a few posts about the size of the collar on the b+f,but myself and others i know aint had a problem with it,battery life in the collar itself isnt to bad either, lights indicating the battery strenth left also...........iff you do get one, keep the magnet and collar well away from each other, the one i got turned itself on up to a few inches apart in a net bag more than once, easy to avoid...as stated in above post, dog settles and imo are very accurate with a bit of practice.... Bailey 16
Just ordered a B & F today hope to have it for the weekend. Have spoken to a few people who have owned the Mk3 and the b & F and they are saying the B & F is by far the best they have used. Quote Link to post
Pumper dog 0
Are we talikng the new long range terrier finders from deben or just the mark III terrier finder, having looked at the deben web site there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between the long range and the B&F similar location distance, no interferance etc. just no directional arrows and a smaller transmitter, anybody used one? I've seen the B&F in action a few times, it seems to make life fairly easy, its just the two usual things that bug me, the price........ as if I buy one they'll bring out a better new and improved one within two months (you watch!) and also collar size, when doing bale stacks and tight spots etc. Would be interested to hear as above, if anyone has used the long range bit of kit? Shamo 319
I was asking about the new long range Locator mate. Sorry I thought it was called the mark 3. Whatever it is I want to know the difference between the Deben 40 feet one and the B&F one. Actually for the digging side of things Quote Link to post

After doin a bit of research there is a new box but the only difference is that it gives a temperature reading and an altitude reading so it realy only benefits mountain rescue. Although sayin that the exact same transciever can be bought for in some cases £60 less than B&F.But according to some guys on another forum B&F will not sell you collars on their own they will only post collars to addresses they have sent transciever boxes to and you have to supply them with the serial code on the back of the box. So feck it B&F if you want it you have to pay for it. Quote Link to post
Shamo 319
I'll tell you what the difference is..... The Deben has a search system of 12 meters ....... The Telemetry B&F has a search system of 65 meters ........ So no real difference really is there? :11: . I think you'll have to define your quetion better than that Shamo , what about the digging side of things ? Somebody with a smart Mouth and a Moderator too! The reason for my Post was to get information which includes what you have given. I didn't want any sarcastic undertones, just some help from some genuine guys, who have actually used the two different systems. What about the digging side of things??..........well when you get to an Earth and put a Dog in, there comes a time when you have to find where it is. With me so far 'chief'? When you find it there are times when it is under Pylons, Fences, next to old galvanised Roofing Sheets, under Cars which have been dumped in the Farmers 'personal' Dump etc. There also comes a time when the Heavens open up and it chucks it down with Rain and the Wind is howling. There are also times when the Earth runs along a fast flowing River and under a Fence next to a Car under some Tin Sheeting. Which one of the systems can you use and not come unstock with. I can give hundreds of different scenarios 'chief', but figured, to most, "what about the digging side of things"? would have been suffice!!....cheers anyway 'chief' for the little bit of info!.....
