Humongous wasp has just stung Fen...

I was taking delivery of our Waitrose shop when an almighty scream errupted from the kitchen...don't worry it wasn't a giant rat, but it was a giant wasp , hanging from Fen's back foot.Fen is our 11 week old Lurcher pup...poor little mite was just looking at it in confusion...thank God it didn't sting her in the mouth.

Anyhow, I've taken what I think is the sting out and put a cold compress on it. She's really upset and can't put her foot down....her foot is swollen, but not worryingly so and she's looking a bit sorry for herself. I don't really need to do anything else, do I..?

What are the symptoms?

 

Swelling is usually the main symptom. This can especially happen on the muzzle of the dog if it gets stung on the face. Your dog may also be yelping in pain or pawing at the sting site.

 

What should I do?

 

First, you want to get the stinger out if it was a bee. Go get some tweezers and try to see if it's still in the dog. Look for the swollen area or around where the dog seems to be aggravated. Sometimes the stinger may not be there, as it will have been pulled out already. You need to check, though, because getting it out will keep more venom from pumping into your dog. If it was a wasp, they don't leave a stinger.

 

Second, you need to watch your dog closely for symptoms of an allergic reaction for at least 24 hours. Like people, some dogs are allergic to bee or wasp stings. Watch for extreme swelling, trouble breathing, or disorientation. If you see any of this, or if it just seems serious, take the dog to the vet.

 

Third, you should be applying ice packs to the site of the sting on the dog. This will keep the swelling and pain down. Leave them on for about 5 or 6 minutes and then take them off for a bit, then repeat.

she is a bit young which is why i suggest half a tablet, normally id give a dog a whole tablet.

it saved the life of a dog of mine many years ago when the dog had a bad allergic reaction to a hornet sting.

Oh thanks Mick...I just called our vet and he said more or less the same. She's cuddling in now and having bits of chicken.Her foot is huge....

If you're sure it's a wasp sting and not a bee, bathing it with a little mild solution of vinegar or lemon juice may help soothe it a bit (bicarb if it's a bee sting.

Keep an eye on her for any severe allergic reactions. Be careful what anti-allergy pills you give her too... Some of the human drugs contain things which are harmful to dogs. The plain Benadryl (just Diphenhydramine) tablets (not the liquid) should be okay, if in doubt, ask your vet.

Thanks everyone...much appreciated. I've given her 1/4 of a 10mg tablet (piriton) and will keep an eye on her....sure she'll be fine.

Our neighbour has just called round...I showed him the wasp, and he said it's a giant African hornet. It really is huge...about the same size as my thumb. And this is going to sound silly, but when I tried to take a photo of it with my phone, it became really aggressive and sort of '

lunged' at the phone. It was actually quite scary, so I squashed it with a riding boot.At least it won't sting anyone else.

Nein one and a half the dose it says for an adult on whatever you use. The active anti histamine ingredient dose not have the same effect per dosage on canines as it does on humans something to do with how they proces it, so it takes a higher dose to work properly on them

Plenty of hornets about down south and it is meant to feel like getting a hot rivet stuck in you when they sting, they dont leave there sting behind though only bee,s do that as there sting is barbed,i had a mut stung years ago about 4 times on his stomach and he came to no harm but he hates the thing now and jumps a mile even if a fly buzzes near him.

Ooooh...? I called our vet to check, because like Carraghs Gem suggested, I was tempted to give her half a tab...but was concerned a she's only 11 weeks old. Anyhow, our vet looked it up and said she musn't have more than 1/4 of a 10mg tablet, as she could easily be overdosed....1/4 Piriton tablet basically.

She's curled up asleep on the bed, with a massive foot!

As mad as this is our vet told us to give an increased dose which we have done especialy on the smallest jrt as she has allergies the reasons being as I posted before they cannot metabolise it the same way we can. None of our dogs have ever had any issues I have just found info on the net that both backs up and knocks back what I have said so take what you will from it but If thats what your vet says then I urge you to follow their advice

 

PS the dosage is (depending on the drug type) up to 8mg of active anti histamine 3 times a day.
