New Rabbit Cage Traps

Well I picked up some rabbit cage traps from Mr Tea Pot and set them out Monday night on a part of my permission I cant really shoot on (Too close to the public) and cant yet ferret. I'm a complet novice to this and had some guidance from Mr Tea Pot. Once again he's come up trumps:notworthy: . Placed 4 traps out Monday night, and didn't have anything the first two nights. Came into work yesterday and had one in the traps. Sorry didn't have my camera with me yesterday:whistling: , but I remebered it today. Came in this morning had another one in the trap. Now for me a rabbit a night is a damn good start. Im really impressed with these cages and will be placing another order shortly. There well made and a really simple design (now if you anything like me kepping it simple is a good thing:blink: )

if they are home made, he's done a better job that me, I could never get the door catch bit to work properly

I did mean to add, you can see in the first pic the left hand trap is one I got off Flebay, I haven't had anything in that since I've had it. The design of these is a very good one, and they are homemade as well:thumbs:

same style as ones i have,i always have two set 24/7 around my ferret court in case of escapees or just to see what is wandering around at night.dunno how many times ive caught hedgehogs in them lolwell done tho

Hi, I like them rabbit traps as they catch cats as well.....like in the back garden.

door catch are simply a lentgh of wire looped on the foot plate long enough to hold the door open, then a small lentgh of wire from the top of the cage holding the wire up to also hold the door up, will try and get a closer pic of mine up

Well its about time glad you are having some luck with the cages i made.

 

I bought some pliers(cant rember what they are called) of JOHN B from FOURTEEN ACRES and they are fantastic for making these cage traps making the job a lot easier.I will be making a few more up in the next few weeks,work out cheaper then the shop bought ones.

As Nod says, it's a fairly simple trigger arrangement.

 

(Extract from Trap Making, Step by Step)

The trigger uses a long straight rod attached to the side of a strip of mesh or metal, which in turn is pivoted on the trap floor as a treadle. To set the trap, the door is swung up and the treadle tilted so that the end of the rod slides through the door and the roof of the trap together. Poked through both meshes like this the rod keeps the door open.

 

Bait is put at the back of the trap, well behind the treadle and not under it. Any animal trying to reach the bait will push or tread on the treadle, which will pivot down, pulling the rod and releasing the door. In practice it is usually necessary to trim some of the mesh squares tocreate an elongated rectangle in the door so that the rod can fall away cleanly.

i think stubby might have meant the door locking mechanism that holds the door shut after the trap has fired. is it necessary to have one when cage trapping rabbits?? and if so how do you make one?

none of the traps i have ,have locks on the doors they are held down by gravity, never had one get out, only pulled out by charlie and some time u get doubles

These cages have not got a locking mech as such but the way they drop and with them weights on them hold the door down so the rabbits cant pull it up.Not as nod said have i had a rabbit pull one up.

well that makes life much easier will have to knock a couple up are those one 30x10x10"??

I rate the rabbit cages highly when there's not much food about for them. We set them in lines 15 foot apart along hedge rows where there are lots of rabbits with all of the doors facing the same way.
