Tasty Treats

How old's the Dog? What are ye feeding it? Does it have company? Does it live outside or with access to ye house?

These are questions I'd like to know the answers to, before launching into one over " Copraphagia ".

But I'm on my last legs here and rushing to do something else. I'll check back later. While I'm gone, do yeself a favour and dismiss all the shit ye may hear about putting Tabasco on the turds - get real!

Bottom line is that the Dog May have become just about incurable. It all depends. I'd suggest that, if it's a pup below 12 months, ye should be in with a chance. Too close to that time? It'll have become a habit.

Ask yeself also: Is it a Real problem? Or it is just your own, natural, revulsion at seeing that Dog eat shit? ;)

 dog eats his own tirds "ummie" anyone know how to cure this habit ?

Shoot the dog?

Seriously... There're several brands of "digestive aids" on the market that you can give your dog as treats that are supposed to make his stool taste bad to him. "Dis-taste" is one of them, "Deter" another; you can probably find others similar where ever you buy your dog supplies. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Some people swear that adding pineapple to a dog's food, or sprinkling unseasoned meat tenderizer on the food works. Again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The only thing I've found that works reasonably well is cleaning up the droppings frequently so there're no "ummies" laying around to munch on, and a loud "No" when you catch them in action.

If you Google "coprophagia" you'll come up with more suggestions than you could use in a dog's lifetime. If anyone knows of one that definitely works, I'd love to know about it myself. :wallbash:

Two years old ??? :icon_eek: In That case, I'm with Bshadle on this one ..... Shoot the bugger!

No, seriously, man; If ~ If ~ it's the medication? Then he may yet just stop of his own accord. But, either way, I doubt it. Fact is that, once they develope a taste for it? It's the very bugger to break them of. They'll even go to innordinate lenghs to out wit ye and snaffle the damn stuff (My god; I can hardly believe I'm contemplating this at this time in the morning!)

One thing then - just out of curiosity: Does he only seem to like them fresh and hot? Seriously! It's just that I've seen my share of this behaviour and I'm just not sure I've ever known a Dog fancy cold ones. Horse or cow shit? Yes. Their own, or other Dogs shit? No. Always seems to be a preferance for steamers.

Jesus H. Christ! Enough of this! I'm off to bed!

Antibiotics destroy the gut's natural bacteria: tht's why its a good idea to give dogs (and humans) natural live yoghurt to eat when on a course of antibiotics. Could be your dog is trying to salvage the bacteria that should be present in his system: ..........or......maybe the antibiotics have changed the flavour of his turds!!

Try giving him natural live yoghurt for a week or so to see if it helps: and maybe try giving him some tripe as well as his beef brisket. I haven't fed brisket, but IMO feeding just one type of food may possibly lead to some defficiences which your dog may be trying to rectify. Hope this helps.

Ditch_Shitter the dog eats the old crusty one's but only his own that I've noticed , skycat could be on the money with the bacteria theory my wife suspected the same so yeh maybe hes in need of some probotics , I found this on another forum , QUOTE #

ok never mind the why or how ... get yourself some ROCK SULFER break a piece about the size of a ten pence piece into the dogs water bowl and change it every 5 days .... problem solved ....... trust me

its gettin hold of the rock sulfer :hmm:

yeh I spose briskets 24/7 would make em look at them little chockie colured cookies in a new light , but hey lifes tuff they get what their given , but I dont reckon the diet plays a big part in it as I had an 18 mth old bullarab do the same but heavily addicted eat all types hot, cold, fresh, stale , his own or not even me mates runny beer shit  all the while this dog was on a well balanced diet as of that you would feed a racing greyhound .Maybe just dirty Barstad's ??

Got me thinking now,no one stops their dog eating grass, drinking from a stream, killing game, foxes and the like and we worry about the odd turd starter

I had a terrier bitch that liked it straight of the production line  ,fit as a flea, game as a pebble, never down at all.

Now i arent for the life in me suggesting watch your dog and have a spoonful of the other stuff, but lets not forget the dog likes what he likes

Its not learned behaviour by any chance roo is it :hmm:

:hmm: Back on this one again, eh? Sorry, Blue Roo; I lost touch with this one. Having fun with my PC just now and this can happen.

Ok, well No One seems to have the Big Answer to 'Coprophagia'. That's one constant and certain. I once spent two entire nights chasing this across the net. Take my word for it: There's no out of the box answer.

Fact that your Dog eats his own ~ crusty or not ~ suggests he's simply trying to reingest something he's eaten, yet craves more of - or simply hasn't managed to fully digest the initial dose of. No?

Did I see you feed him brisket? I use 'Breast of Lamb'. Yesterday the Butcher ran out of that, but cut me some 'Beef Brisket'. Breast of cow. It seems to have a lot less BONE in it than the lamb does. Is this Dog getting enough Calcium? (I'm not, nor am I trying to appear, clever. I'm just kicking this thing around with ye)

Also; Isn't beef said to denude the body of some trace thing ....? Maybe worth sniffing around that area. No?

Rock Sulpher? Should be able to buy a tub of it in any pet suppliers of animal feed store. In UK it's put in their drinking water during hot weather. I tend to use it myself - even though I'm not exactly sure what it's meant to do for them. Just a traditional thing.

Vegetable / cooking oil? Mine get that most meals. Hey, guess what? None of them eat shit! However, I Very much doubt the oil makes a damn of differance. I'm sure I had a couple of hard core crap snackers who also had oil on their regular feeds. One was definately learning it from the first one too. Both pups.

I'm with Skycat on the single item diet concern too. See what I just said about beef and think about that.

However, having just been reminded that the Dog's on medication and a two year old??? Have we all just wasted our time here ....? IF the Dog's only started since the medication .....

Hey ho. Maybe we still got some stuff down here that might help others? ;)
