lamp not holding charge

Recommended Posts

Ive got a DiaMex 12v 18AH battery attached to the end of my Striker.....Just got it out for after the summer, gave it a day and half on charge, went out last night (drove 15 mile) only to have it 'dim out' on me after about 3 runs!!!!....

I'm not that technically minded and wondered if anyone knows if this battery has had it..........or whether there is anything I can do to fix it?????........... don't really ant to have fork-out for a new one unless Im really forced to!!!

I have used it regularly over the last 2 seasons, and it used to do 2-3 hours easily before!

Thanks

you have burnt it out you only charge a battery for 10 hrs an they will last u years

It depends on the amperage of the charger. Most trickle chargers are only millamps and can quite easily take a day or so to fully charge a battery, depending on size

 there are chargers out there that you can keep a battery linked up to as long as you want(better than trickle charger) try adapting a decent 12V cordless charger or even a decent car charger with motorbike function and intelligence times have moved on lads  no dissy intended and anyone with a fckd ni.cd battery pm me i may be able to help you.lamp or cordless drill.

Aye smart chargers, they turn themselves off so not to damage the battery.

I was just explainint that charging for over 10 hours wont damage the battery (depending on output etc)

it fcuked mate you have let the menory go on it ..should keep it toped up in the summer months..

batteries do not have memories you numpty :tongue2:

try totaly discharging your battery , by wiring a low wattage bulb to it , car sidelight or indicator bulb would do . then try charging it with a good quality slow charging charger for a good 16-20 hours . then see how you get on .. worked for me

:db:i think that thay do.. :db:look on the box:thumbs:

yes they do

a battery does not have a memory ... it will start acting LIKE it as a memory if you never discharge it .. by this i mean if you constantly charge a battery from half full it will only take a half charge all the time unless you completly discharge it ...

you CAN NOT ruin a batteries memory cause there is no such thing ..

point taken, sorry i didnt go into complete details, its actually classed as MEMORY EFFECT

is it ni,cd or ni,mh.?

whats the diffrence in them??? all i know is sertain 1's dont charge on my charger! WHY?

hard to explain on here but ya dewalt and co 12v chargers for drills and things have a built in inteligence chip that will charge till full then turn off till needed to trickle it reads the battery's capacity and works around it were as a trickle charger just keeps going all the time having not bought a lamp for twenty years i can't knock the new ones but i still run a battery (18 amps i think)on a halfords charger stick it to bike and sealed and it takes care i hav'nt lamped for years but the battery is ok.and for anyone interested there are small torches(£150 in this country) £40 delivered from china with rechargeable batterys that will give a good inner light out to 80 yrds till you see them dont diss them awesome!! its what the bizzies use to blind perps for 10 secs at close quarters if i can be arsed i will video one for the unbelieving experts 225 lumins i think had beer so can't be arsed looking.but i will.

Battery chargers should only charge the type of battery that they were designed to charge as each type of battery has a different charging cycle.

The optimiser chargers which you can leave your battery connected to are a good way to keep them topped up or just charge your batt at least once a month when not in use.If you dont then the batt voltage drops to low (over discharged) & the charger will not sense that it is connected to a battery & so does not start to charge. If you have one of the old type car batt chargers with an amp meter on you may be able to get it to charge (lead acid batt),all depends on how low the batt voltage is.

As for the op question i would say your batterys knackered.

Its also worh remebering that batterys can only be recharged so many times. So to get the most from your battery only re charge when your battery is discharged (lamp has gone to dim).So say you can use your lamp for 4hr's but you only use it for 2 & then put it on charge you have used 1 charge cycle but only had half the use.

Memory effeect on batterys is caused by the charger, not the battery. This only applies to the electronic type chargers & not the old analouge type (with amp meter).Again make sure the battery is discharged before you recharge to avoid problems.

To reset the charger disconnect the battery & switch of the charger (if it has a switch) & unplug from the mains.let stand for a min before re using. This should, but not always clear any memory effect on the charger.

Sorry to woffle on,but i hope this answers your questions.

And your spot on,some of the new LED torches are awesome.Ive been using a Derelight DBS v3.300 lumins & 250-300m spot beam & fits in your pocket. Was £90 with batterys & free shipping from China. The other thing i like about it is you can chose different tints of LED so you dont have that crap blue light.

Thats a cracking deal that.Worth noting if you want more throw go for a light with a smooth reflector rather than the textured/orange peel reflector. If you want any info on lights of any kind, reviews, beam shots, try the candlepower forum.Worth having a look anyway & you dont have to be a member.
