whippet outdoors

Could anyone tell me if it is ok to keep whippets kennelled outdoors and do they need any special conditions in winter,heat lamp etc ?...been told they do not adapt well to outdoor living..anyone got an opinion?

My young whippet bitch was born outside and has adapted well, she is living outside in a wooden shed at present.

Not a sound out of her, even the first night i got her.

 

She sleeps next to the freezer, where the warm air comes out. and lots of straw arounf her.

Im getting a heat lamp soon though, as the nights are not that cold yet, but, as its winter, i dont want to take that chance, if suddunly the temp droped way below freezing.

iv got 2 kenneled outside no problems , got heat lamp for when it gets colder and they sleep on old blankets filled will straw , they havint made a sound at night .

had a whippet bitch years ago she was kenneled out side no prob, but they do like there comforts , it was hard work getting her from in front of the fire :whistle:

My lurcher is 1/2 whippet....sleeps outside 365 days a year and it gets COLD here......no problems and he is an old man now.

i think this belief comes about because they look frail at the best of times plus the fact that they are easy to keep indoors,i think like all working dogs they'll benefit from being kenneled outdoors,as long as they've a good box they'll be fine imo.pups though will benefit fom a heat lamp in the colder nights.

many thanks for the replies chaps...whilst on the subject,would someone kindly tell me if a kc reg whippet can still work/race...or is it like most other breeds where the working ability of kc dogs has been ruined.

 

do 100 per cent whippets make good working dogs as opposed to crosses...

whippets can live outside, but do feel the cold more than other dogs as they have thinner skin, but with a blanket, heat lamp they will be fine, KC reg whippets (depends what lines they are from too, racing/working/showing) the working KC lines are brill at thier job,

 

my KC reg racing bred whippet is rubbish at hunting , he won't go into bushes/hedges, hates the rain and cold weather, and tip-toes threw mud! my 1/2 whippet 1/2 greyhound bitch is 100% perfect on everything,

 

if your going for a KC whippet I'd advise you to go with a good working line rather than a racing/show line

The KC whippets are generally from different lines depending on what you want them for

 

eg

Show

Race

Coursing

Working

 

but all are still kc registerd just look into what you want it for and research what lines will suit you best :thumbs-up:

many thanks again for the replies...would somebody be able to point me the right way into doing a spot of research on these lines....im interested in a kc racing/coursing type if possible...what are the lines called? where can i found out about them ? what is the average size of a racing/coursing type...some ive seen seem real delicate..but then again i havent seen many.

Racing whippets are smaller, and have a smaller bone structure, and are a lot lighter too than working bred whippets,

 

also another point with racing whippets is crypto/mono dogs which means a lot of them have 1 or no testicals, which is a common factor among them saddly,

 

my own racing bred whippet has no testicals, and after weeks of research on them (after I found out my dog had none) alot of racing lines have this condition,

 

if you do have your heart set on a racing whippet, do ask if the line has mono/crypto dogs, bitches bred from these lines are carriers of the condition too.

part of the hunting pack is a kc reg laguna/nimrodel dog lives outside not a peep out of him just plenty of blankets in his box in winter works like a demon no probs cant go far wrong on these lines hope this helps.

i have a whippet x grayhound (quater greyhound) it if of laguna whippet lines she is 23 to the shoulder and is RAPID all i do in the winter is put some extra blankets down for her.she was outside since a pup so shes got used to it :thumbs-up:

She will not come in the house, i have found out.
