Getting used to wearing a collar

Recommended Posts

I have recently bought some mk 3 collars and a finder and was wondering the best way to get the ferrets used to wearing them?

Would it be best to just put them on the ferrets for an hour or so a day,or leave the collars on for a full day once a week?

I have a couple of older jills that have never seen a collar before and a few of this years kits.

Your suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated

Just buy an ordinary ferret collar (ebay, pet shop etc, 2-3 quid) and put it on them a few times for a couple of hours or so. Give them a treat etc when you do it so they get used to having a collar on.

Not only will they get used to having a collar on but you will also get used to putting it on tight enough to stay on (so you don't have to dig for an empty locator collar!) but also not so tight that you strangle the fert.

Cheers, D.

Ive left collars on for a good eight hours before when out ferreting all day, never seen a wrecked coat :hmm: unless that's show ferret talk

put them on for a few hours each day, while the ferts are in their cages/court, dont over do it, you'll soon find they recognise collars with rabbiting, and all mine stay still while fixing them in place

Pop a collar on and put them back in there hutch ,they might scratch it for a few minutes but they will soon settle down and get used to it .And once they connect the collar with getting out working they dont wriggle at all

To be honest - first time i tried a locator was on a full days ferreting - stuck the collar on the jill when we got to the permission - she scratched for a couple of seconds then got very distracted by working, didn't seem to bother her in the slightest. Wish they had smaller collars tho, they're a bit bulky for a small jill.

Just put them on the ferrets for a few hours each day, some dont mind and some make a huge show over it. i got one gill that doesent care and another which pushes its head across the floor as if ive tied a lead weight round its neck. shes getting better with it on now though

Thanks for the replies, I will try and get them used to it over the next few of weeks by putting the collars on and off a few times and leaving them on for a few hours at a time.

Hopefully once they are used to it if i can get them to associate the collars with going out to work they will should enjoy it when the collars go on because they will realise they are going rabbiting.
