Hi everyone,

A lot of you seem to be very well travelled judging by previous posts.

I'm going to Almaty in Kazakhstan next september, to an aboriginal dog conference and to see Tazi's hunting with eagle etc.

Do anyone have advice on Accomadation or any other general experiences that I should consider?A lot of Hotels seem expensive yet I am told there is accomadation from about £15 per night perhaps B&B's?.

Regards

Mark

Been right on the border mate,Urumqi and Xinjiang, get yourself up into the Tien Shan awesome mountains although Almaty is in the foothills of the Alatua range.Try drinking Kumiss :drink::no: .

Theres an economic boom there at the moment, oil and gas, maybe thats pushed accommodation prices up as migrant workers flood in?

Thanks for the replies,

I've never been abroad since I was a kid, so it's a bit daunting at times especially as it looks like I'll be leaving the uk on my own to meet up with others from the US and Russia in Kazakhstan.

I hope to be able to go to the Tien Shan as this is where the Taigans are. Did you see any when you were there?

How did you get on with the Kazakhs? I've been told they are very friendly people.

Thanks for advice re Jags.

The host of the trip as contacts in Almaty, hopefully he will find cheap accomadation. Could always take a tent!!

I stayed on the Chinese side of the Tien Shan mate en route to the Mongolian side of the Altai. The people on the Xinjiang side are Uigurs, excellent people, and yes,I did stay in native tents when upcountry, they are nomadic people living in round felt, canvas tents called yurts, reminded me of camping in Weardale as a kid :D

Never saw Taigans when I was there, saw big herd guarding mongrels though.Taigans are used for Marmots, hares and fox right? :hmm:

Yes also wolves and leopard in the extreme certain dogs are known to be able to take wolves single handed, where as the Tazi's need the assistant of large shepard dog for the kill!!!

They are one serious hunting dog capable of coursing in thin air altitude and over unbelieveably rough ground. They also have used them in dog fights and I've stories of them accounting well for themselves against pit bulls.

This is a Tazi (Saluki) from Kazakhstan, Taigans are from over the south border in Kyrgystan.

just thought you might want to know a few facts about khazakstan, according to a particular citizen of their country;

its the greatest country in the world

all the other countries are ruled by little girls

dont quite know ho true it is - maybe you could expand on that theory when you return! :11: :D

I know what you mean about high altitude and thin air,I have suffered mild altitude sickness several times due to not acclimatizing.Your trip sounds fantastic,it will certainly be an eye opener :icon_eek: .

I will be at the wifes office Xmas party this coming saturday(plenty to eat and a five star hotel thrown in by her company)one of her colleagues has a husband who works as a petrochemical engineer,I am sure he has worked in the region, will see if he has any info on Almaty :hmm:

Hi Blando,

Thats as good as it gets to be honest, I'd say it is an old 35mm photo that has be scanned, I got it from a US Falconer, who keeps Tazi's and is going on the trip to Kazakhstan, it is fairly probable that he took the photo himself as he spent in mongolia with the Kazakh eaglehunter.

If anyone is interested in eagle falconry, aboriginal dogs and are seriously interested in actually going on this trip PM me and I'll give more details.

Regards

Mark
