asked this question 2 yrs ago ? got a lot against it on health grounds it was to be her 1st litter, i thought nothing of it & went ahead with it ,6weeks in i was doing the kennels there was a bit of a fight out in the run ,sorted it out but the bitch was having some type of fit she died shortly after , my conclusion was shi went into a fit which caused the fight & her death due to being in pup .but its totally up to you but dont take things lightly like i did . good luck with what ever you decide.

hello mate , i have just been through the same thing with a springer, who is 8 and the vets told me to bring it in and have it checked over which costs £35 notes, to which i did and they just check the over all condition of the dog, heart, lungs, and if she pass"s then he gives you the all clear, the down sides to breeding from older dogs is they sometime give up pushing the puppies out because they dont have the energy to finish, should this happen the u will need to take her back to the vets for them to give her oxytocine, which will make her start pushing again, which was needed for mine, but after all this if she is fit and well should not be a problem hope this helps, atb phil

I bred a litter a few months ago of a bitch who is just now turning 10.She had 8 pups all alive and well and reared them the best, she had been bred from before though.Problems with breeding can occur with a dog at any age although I appreciate probably more so in an old dog.Theres always a risk incurred in breeding.

If you want a pup from her. What choice do you have. Good luck!

Be prepared for a Caesarian if it is a first litter. Even if the bitch has had a litter before sometimes at that age the uterus just doesn't have the necessary 'push' left in it. I've bred from old and tried bitches one last time and had to have a Caesar. Just make sure you know what the danger signs are if she goes into whelp and can't pass the pups: better to get her to the vet too early rather than too late when all they can do is extract a litter of dead and dying pups. I'd reccomend a book called The Book of the Bitch which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about breeding. It's a small paperback so doesn't cost a fortune either: well worth it for anyone starting out breeding.

I have an almost 9 year old bitch here and if i hadn't of had her spayed 5 years ago i would still breed her now, i think it depends how well your bitch is, my bitch still runs about like a youngster and doesn't really look her age but some dogs look ancient at 9!! If she is fit and healthy go for it but any pregnancy is risky, just more so with the older age, good luck whichever you decide.

If you really 'need' that pup from her, and I do mean need. Would that pup be better than any other you could buy, to save any risk on your bitch?

It can be a big risk for an older bitch (then again isn't there daily risk to any dog in its chosen vocation?) 'BUT' she's had a litter before and if you have her very fit and well, she should be quite capable....
