collie/grey 238
Ideation i myself own 4 of those dogs, a retired bitch, a young pup that may possibly not have much of a woking life due to a ruptured cruciate knee ligament when younger, a 4 year old bitch who is my only worker at present and a greyhound that i may have fun with on the lamp but she has already bust a toe and a few others on her feet so she may be fecked after abit of hard running, MLB has a 6 year old dog that will soon be retired due to a recurring back injury, an 18 month bitch that will be shown alot of work this season and a 9 month bull x bitch in replace of the 6 year old and a couple of veterans, our mates each have 2 dogs each one of which lives in a vilage not to far from us, the dogs that work get shown enough to get tested as we travel alot to work them also. The retired ones will stay until there last days. If we didn't have the work for them, we wouldn't have them tbh. 2 dogs each have plenty of work to do and by the end of the season 1 dog or the other is laid up through injury and only working part time helps get alot of time with the dogs to! Happy hunting!! Oh and as for ferrets we only have 2 each. Cheers for the reply and not taking it personally. I know that with retired dogs, and up and coming pups, you can often have double the dogs in your kennel than you really work. However i've seen a few folk on here that have like 6 working lurchers etc, or go out with groups of friends so anyone night/day they are running 6/8 dogs. Maybe they have a lot of injuries or a huge amount of game, but if your dogs are not super accident prone, two fit, working, capable dogs can work and take a huge amount of game, and i think are not really tested until they have had a good 4+ years or working something like 4/5 times a week (for a good session). Maybe i'm wrong . . . . The maximum number of dogs that go out working is 2, maybe a 3rd if a mate comes along, we mainly lamp as daytime is just too risky around here and yes i agree 2 dogs is plenty and we have on many occasions gone out solo just 1 person 1 dog, i and mlb are happy with what our dogs do and if anyone feels otherwise why worry, we are the ones that own and work the dogs so................and yes i agree dogs aren't tested until they have a good few seasons under they're belt, i don't see your point there?? None of this is in any way trying to get at you, i'm not realy talking about your dogs or you, you just made me think, so you don't need to make personal justifications. With regards to the testing statement, again it wasn't aimed at you, I just find it strange that a lot of folk have more dogs than they can really test and get to know, most of the time they are spreading the work of one or two dogs over three or four dogs, again its up to the owner, but i don't really get the point of it and think it can be a little unfair on the dogs.
