stealthy1 3,964
I was all ready to go out this evening with an old boy who I ferret with sometimes in the Winter, to do a bit of lead flinging, when he rang to say his daughter had taken ill, and that he was baby sitting his grand kids, could'nt knock him for that, we all love our kids eh! So there I was scratching my chin, pondering on whether or not to get a shave now, or leave it until morning. Ha! stubble I thought, I'll have a drive round the stubble and see whats about, all the gear was ready to go anyway, so why waste an opportunity to go whacking. A quick drive round a few fields while it was light just to make sure nobody had decided hide any implements in the straw, from you know who. I could make out a few good runs coming under the hedges on a couple of fields, so I was starting to feel lucky. So with the recce done, I went home for a cup of tea and a bit of the carrot cake I saw the Mrs sneak into the shopping this afternoon, you'll have to be quicker than that girl So after eating half, dont want her getting fat do I, and a quick drive up to the petrol station, it was starting to get dark. So game on. Trundling down the first field in the cut lanes trying to avoid the wheelings, due to the wheelings make too much noise, I could just make out around ten brown blobs in headlights walking down the field, in already I thought, but all of a sudden the blobs took to the air, Grey Partridges At least I know where they are for Winter. It was'nt long before the landy lights picked out the brown hopper trying to sneak back into the hedge, but he was'nt sneaky enough, WHACK! and my first bunny looked like it was looking for a needle in a haystack, kicking up straw all over the place. A quick pickup and I'm off in search of number two. Its amazing how warrens just develop out of sight in the hedges, with out the corn being disturbed in some fields. WHACK! Number two followed his tunnel digging buddy into the boot of the landy, and while picking this one up I notice a bit of tunnel industry going on in this piece of hedge, so its ear marked for ferreting before the new crop gets knawed to death I was beginning to think this was too easy, and wondered if my boot was big enough for tonights haul, but that pipe dream lasted as long as it took to drive the next two fields, and see nowt Field four looked like it would produce a few bunnies, but only gave up one bunny foolish enough to stop and admire my landy's lights, WHACK! and it joined the other two ferret dinners. The next two field are rabbit proofed with fencing, but you never know, there may be a tunnel in progress, but there was'nt On to the last field I had done the recce on I could see bunnies doing one into the woods at the other end, and the faster I drove over to stop them the faster they ran for the woods But not to worry. After a full circuit of the last field, which yeilded nothing more than a chase, I decided to get off home and finish the carrot cake, if the Mrs had not beat me to it, and just as I reached the gate hole, up sat bunny number four, WHACK! Four shots, four whacked, so what looked like a cancelled outing, turned into a productive little jolly over the stubble, which turned up a couple of bits of ferreting for the coming season, some Grey Partridge's for the oven when they fatten up a bit on the corn. The end of day shot looked like this Only just noticed the silver at the bottom of this pic while I was downloading them. Anyway, keep at them folks! stealthy. 7 Quote Link to post
