FightTheBan 1,147
I am looking into the possibility of buying a 4x4. I have narrowed it down to either a Hilux pickup or a shogun commercial (3.2). Thing is, I am not the most experienced with this so hopefully some knowledgable people will help me with my questions. What will be most economical(mpg)? Best offroad? What will be most reliable, and cheapest to fix when something goes wrong? What is likely to go wrong and what will it cost (bearing in mind it will be second hand and most lkely 50k+ miles)? Cheapest to insure? Road tax? Thanks very much for any answers, very much appreciated FTB

FightTheBan 1,147
I would have thought the shogun would be more economical. Bigger engine, less reving etc? If it were your money what wouyld you go for and why?. It wont be doing a great deal of towing. Will mainly be used for running about, shooting/lamping/digging and running dogs so will take a bit of abuse but still needs to be comfortable for day to day use. Cheers. Lab 10,979
Whatever you choose i'd go diff lock and good tyres as a must, you'll get most places then!! None of these big 4x4's are good on juice and just a joke when you put a trailer on. Comfort wise my navara is much better than my cousins warrior and more spacious as well. FTB Not the case with my 4x4. It's a three litre diesel, and i'm a sympathetic driver but i still only get around 21mpg.

bert the fert 28
What is that your driving mate? FTB It's a Nissan Terrano, best avoided like the plague. It's just cost me 806 quid to drag it through its MOT.
HGN 150
Hilux - unbelieveably bomb proof once when firing down a back lane hit a hilux head on without getting a chance to get the brakes on (in a forester) - I ran smack head on into it - in came the engine through the dash and resultant flames almost immediately - after some pulling and pushing I managed to get out and after watching my motor burn through to a crisp the chap (having offered me a lift) drove off with a wave in the same hilux I had just pushed backwards throu a hedge FTB not sure what your after but if safety is a concern I would go hilux every day now Edited August 8, 2010 by HGN
TOPPER 1,809
toyota knock spot of mitzis on fuel economy id go HILUX or if you don t want to spend to much on a second moter look at a landcruiser model theres some cheap ones about now and they just go on and on with no problems , diff locks are standard front back and centre they go anywhere with good boots on and i get 30 to32mpg out of my old dog bus and its got 433,000 on it now and the engines never been touched and in all those miles i bet i havent spent £300 on parts for it , that why i brought another one i rate them very highly and all i do is abuse them

Same here, only get 26mpg taking it steady in Mazda B Series, 2.5 diesel; get it up to 65 on the motorway and its like theres a hole in the fuel tank

My last car was an evo that under spirited driving returned around 6mpg. And it would only run on V power fuel. Edited August 9, 2010 by bert the fert
