J Darcy 5,871
Good Allrounders are only common on the net. In true life, they do not come along too often. Deer, hare and rabbit? ferreting and working with a gun both on land and in water? Both fur and feather, day and night? Retrieving to hand? Theres not too many lurchers that can do this. I purposely left foxes out as, to me, fox killing was never a "must have" in my lurchers. If they did, they did, but if they didn't then it was no great shakes. Harry Millwards Rosie was probably as near to an all rounder that you could get... But....in all honesty.....no dog excells at every discipline, no matter what some spurious advertisements say, i.e tumblers .... Just my take on things... a good thread, keep it up chaps.... poacher3161 1,766
I believe thers been good alround lurchers kept for catching edible quarry over the years proberbly kept by people who have never craved the limelight like appearing in books and magazines and have chose to keep them selfs to themselfs. blacktabs 3
If you had asked this question thirty years ago when the pits were on strike there would have been more than a fair few alrounders out there. We were brought up to believe a lurcher capable of most tasks ferreting and mouching from pups then onto the lamp and coursing as they grew up only thing we never bothered was fox as there was no profit in them. whin 463
had afew great all rounders maybe two ,one dog one bitch ,as there size leant to bolting rabs and hare , and powerful enough for catching other game ,had several people of here and local saw therm in action thay all wanted one , to have a real good allround dog beter working it on its own ,but better stil it has to have the mental attitude to go the extra mile on hard nites ,had some real big bags with them and always caut something edible or pests , so much so you wouldnt want to take them if you were out a quite qalk cause they were game finders and desperate ,best all rounders size wize both 25 26 and powerful fast and real fit out 3 or 4 times aweek , early morning late nites , plenty natural wind and good fitnes at the top of there game ,not saw any other dogs in that class yet or guys who have the knoweledge and gameness to make the doogs like that takes time and patience and people who want game regulary ,only had one saluk type like that and one collie type got pups out of both one simliarr stamp but not the size yet ,but got the speed and balls so far, all the best dogs have to be bred [bANNED TEXT] and worked [bANNED TEXT] and nowadays the balls to do the job as there added hassle nowadays Quote Link to post
