take no notice of the negative comments ,as they are from peeps who i haven't seen in this section on a regular basis

 

if peeps are approaching you then what harm is going to do to ask to contribute to-wards fuel,

in most cases the answer will be no! but if you feel you need to ask then dammit! ask don't listen to the f**k wits who are trying to start an argument!

 

i have asked before,but have yet had no one give me any thing! so what i aint got i aint missing!

and this is a friendly section when the regs are all on

 

try asking for an hourly rate??

Love reading this part of the forum as it is much more layed back than other topics. Just wondering if it is acceptable to ask for payment for rat culling. When we started off shooting and killing rats with the terriers we were ( and still are) just happy enough to get some permission. One permission , for eg,which doesent lend itself to ratting with the dogs , we have taken over 150 rats since we startred in January with our guns and night scopes. However this meant many visits to the small holding as on averagge we take about 10 rats per night. As I drive a 3 litre petrol Subaru Outback ( 19 miles per gallon)and its a 25 mile round trip and pellets arent exactly cheap does any one think ( for new permissions) that it would be a tad cheeky to ask for some payment say for petrol or even a tin of pellets now and again as we must be saving them loads on poison .We are not pro pest controlers but we do a good job for people, but ofcourse we damn well enjoy it too , what do people think, cheers Ted

Having read your post again i see you use the term 'WE' implying there's more than just you going, if this is the case why not ask the other/s to chip in for fuel every now and again? I also notice you mention charging for new permissions, i appologise as i didnt read this part right, it seems that you are being asked by others who have herd abou you to perform a task for free, i would kindly say that you have been inundated with offers of work and that due to the amount of travelling involved you will now have to start charging a small fee. The ones with genuine rat problems will have no problems slipping you a few quid for work well done.

I live in Leeds and scored a lovely new permision over the far side of Halifax that's a good hours drive from where I live.

 

I used to drive a 4x4 Toyota and as times are rather tight at the moment, I've just swapped it for a sh1tty Astra turbo diseaseal, mainly so as I can get over without it costing me £15 in fuel.

 

I hear what you're saying about wanting to keep the Scooby but needs must and all that...

 

You're mates should be chipping in if they're not already. As has been said, if you try to charge it'll soon turn into another job. Folks will be pestering you and there's a chance of falling out with them 'cos they'll expect a lot more from you guys as regards time, commitment and results.

Hi mate,

 

Apart from anything else, as soon as money changes hands, your insurance (BASC, CA, NGO) etc will become invalid, and you should start doing risk assessments and all that old rubbish!

 

Enjoy your sport for what it is, sport. As said, also get mates to chip in for juice, and maybe try a cheaper pellet? At ratting ranges most will do the job as well as the top notch brands. I use marksman roundheads for my ratting, cheap as chips! I use a low-powered Milbro that I paid £25 for, with a JSR red dot that was £3.99!

 

Does the job better than my Ultra setup!!

Thanks again for the replys guys. Probs cos I am soft as s..t I wont even ask anyone but times are hard for everyone at the moment and I see people buying rat poison from the warehouse my wife works at and the prices are mad , just thought it might help everyone .I go shooting with my son in law who is obviously married to my daughter and they have a coupl,e of little uns so I just wouldnt ask for petrol money from him... its hard enough to pay mortgage and feed and clothe kids etc. I take in what you all have posted and probably what I will do with new permission is make a joking remark and see what happens, but like said this is my hobby so I should just get on with it.Thanks again love this site, cheers Ted

Next time your talking to the land owner, you could just drop into the conversation the rising cost of pellets and/or petrol and see if he takes the bait . You've got nothing to lose mate

Hunting regularly can be an expensive sport,the few seasons before last i was spending an average of 60 pound a week on diesel,that was three trips rabbiting with lurchers,a couple of nights ratting,maybe a nights sea fishing plus anything else that crops up.Some weeks cost more as at that time i was lamping the lurcher as much as possible plus the daytime stuff.Then theres the cost of gear,the wear on tear on a 4 x 4,vet bills etc etc.

It had to stop(not the hunting just the expense) and i had to ask the lads i was hunting with to chip in or with alot of what i do ive found lads who i can trust to come along with me. ( i must stress that my mates half and half and arcticgun off this forum have always chipped in more than their share of diesel costs...)

BUT i wouldnt personally ask for money off a farmer or keeper as im just glad of the sport,even though im reasonably happy with the amount of hunting and fishing i do im always on the look out for more.There are just so many lads out there looking for their first permissions that would gladly put in the time and effort for free.I spend every spare penny on hunting and have even built up debt on credit cards because when ive been skint instead of not going id use my flexible friend.Stupid i know but there you go.BUT i dont have kids so i dont have to look at a bigger picture of providing for family and all my spare time and what little cash is left after bills is mine to use on whatever i want.

rushty id say to the farmer next time your talking to him that you would love to visit his farm more often but that its an expensive pastime.you never know he might just help out.im sure alot of farmers could easily help with diesel
