alexcjacko 1
would/has anyone had a terrier of any kind as a gundog ie rough shooting or picking up and beating? Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
Yes, I use my Borders for this. My bitch will point and mark too. Edited August 5, 2010 by Dawn B Quote Link to post
butcherboy 68
Great pics I've seen some brilliant terriers in the beating line, lovely steady pace & don't go to far away. The fun usually starts when ground game gets up though Many a chase with the dog in full cry. Quote Link to post
taffy apple 32
my old jack bitch used to retrieve pretty well...just a tad hard mouthed though... Edited August 6, 2010 by taffy apple Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
I firmly believe that most dogs can be taught to retrieve game but i would not get a terrier to do the job specificaly. Quote Link to post
alexcjacko 1
great pics mate has the border got hard mouth and does it work to whistle? Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
great pics mate has the border got hard mouth and does it work to whistle? She is fine with anything that is dead, fur or feather, but crushes if its alive. Dead game is perfect when she brings it to you. My male was ok with dead stuff, till a Woodie, flapped as he got to it, he minced it and I cannot use him any more, he minces EVERYTHING dead or alive. Dont mind though if we are out after Squirrels, I still use him. He has a super nose, will tack for miles, the bitch will find and mark. Quote Link to post
alexcjacko 1
good pair of dogs mate did you get them retrieving feather by putting it in a tight and pull the wings through? Quote Link to post
Dave C 63
I use my terriers when we are shooting the wood piles, we have about 20 dotted around my permission and it takes a hard terrier to get through them and its always interesting what might come out. This is Ted He is also good at dispatching Crows And Buster is 8 months now and getting used to shot, so he will be having a run out this season. Terriers wouldnt be my first choice to take shooting because of the lack of control compared to a gundog, but as i have them for other types of work anyway its good to give them a go now and again and like running them through the wood piles and thick cover they do have there uses, so if you fancy working one give it a go mate, if you put the time in you may be surprised how well trained you can get them.
