.17 HMR OR .17 MACH 2

Recommended Posts

Interesting theory, but surely if a .17 slot allows any .17 calibre then surely that would cover .17Rem and .17FB? :icon_eek: :icon_eek:

99% sure you wouldn't get away with it in Glos! That said, I'd rather have either of them than either of the rimfire calibres - they don't seem to do much that LR won't and the hornet's everything an HMR tries to be but falls short.

No, because the slot would normally say .22RF or .17RF so they'd have to at least be rimfires.

I am finding it hard to find .17 mach 2 rifles. Most manufacturers dont seem to be backing the round that much.

So far i have come up with

1: Sako Quad

2: CZ America and varmint

the sako is where i am starting to lean towards as i would get a .22lr in good condition secondhand and buy a new .17 Mach 2 barrel for it then if the round does become discontinued then i haven't got a rifle that cant be used.

however i have been told bad things about the Sako and this draws be back towards the everfaithful CZ.

I dont understand why .17Mach 2 has not taken off it will do everything that a Hmr will do, it burns cleaner meaning better accuracy for more rounds, quieter shots and above all ammunition is half the price of Hmr

So answer me this how is HMR the better round ????????????

(this post is writen to encourage views from all quarters it is not a condemnation of the HMR cal.)

Enjoy

I think it's because it sits a little too closely between LR and HMR. It's effective range is little more than the LR will acheive (once you know your aim points) but doesn't hit as hard as the HMR. It still costs more than LR for ammo and is not noticeably quieter than HMR.

In short, the only real benefit is the cost of the ammo against HMR, if that's a big problem then the LR is even cheaper.

There's some more info here but as it's written from an American perspective bear in mind they don't consider what most UK shooters consider a major benefit of LR, it's quietness.

I think the only reason the HM2 "burns cleaner" as you put it, is that it uses less powder to push the bullet, less stuff burning, means less smoke and soot in the barrel, so less fouling, I'd prefer the HMR as it is I think a tad faster and flatter and so carriesd a bit more oomph, which gives me more confidence when dealing with opportunistic foxes, I look at an HM2 round and it looks like it belongs in a cap gun, I know it dosen't, but that's what it looks like to me, I have greater confidence in the HMR.

as for the rifle choice, toughie, I looked at the sako when I bought bu HMR, but settled on an annie instead, I don't like the feel of that triangular bolt knob, otherwise, you'd do OK if you bought the CZ and got Timney trigger for it, as IMO, CZ rimmie triggers are junk,p horrid creepy mushy things they are..... but then I have been spoiled by my Annie.... that's what I'd do.

I have a .17 mach 2 in sako quad , never had a problem with it and think its an excellent little round i actually sold my hmr and .22lr for this and have no regrets but as has been said its a personal preference , though i will say i will be selling it soon as mostly always now take my wmr as also use this for fox and plus i want another .22lr for the silence.

The MachII will not do everything a .17HMR will do.

Phrases like BETTER are meaningless, on that basis a .243 or .308 are "Better", the HMR is NOT a better round than the MachII, it is different.

The HMR nevertheless hits harder, is faster and flatter shooting and noise wise there is little or nothing in it. If that is a definition of better so be it!
