s410 now down on power

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have had my s410 .22 for a few months now.

Chrono from new was 10.5 lowest to 11.49 highest.

I have put around 1000 aa diablo fields through the gun now and chronoed it today.

Basically not very impresses as the highest it got over a string was 10.46.

At a full 190bar charge it used start at 10.98 and start rising to a sweet spot start at 160bar.

Now its down to 10.13 at 190 bar and stays at a pretty consistent 10.5 ish all the way down to 130bar.

Basically it seems I have lost 1ftlb.

The FPS is also down from a high of 560, now at 543fps.

The only thing I have changed between the 1st chrono and this one today, is the 1st was done with pellets straight from the tin. I used the 1st tin up and on buying the 2nd tin , I washed, dryed and very lightly lubed the pellets, surely this wouldnt cause such a loss in power output?

Any ideas?

Sorry buddy, can't help you on the power drop, have you tried another "dry" tin?

Give that a go and it will answer your question as to is it the lube?

My Springer is running at a steady 10.5 and it is more than enough to drup bunnies at "normal" 35-40 yard airgun ranges.

I have no doubt at all in my mind that a PCP as fine and accurate as the S410 will drop them at well beyond that range at that power, if you are up to doing your bit.

Lets face it, you only need a tiny amount of retained energy to switch off a bunny instantly if your aim is true ie in the noggin.

The longest shot I have heard of with a perfectly clean brain shot is 107 yards using a Ripley (set at sub 12) bench rested and witnessed by a number of people at Hull & District FTC. Working that out with a 16 grain pellet and the gun at 12 ft/lbs there is still 5.2 ft/lbs of energy and the pellet is moving at 383ft/sec.

If I were to do that with my springer at 10.5 and same pellet is still 4.3ft/lbs retained energy. And before anyone pipes up about me trying it with a springer, I'm not stupid and I won't try it with a springer :nono:

Hi, Markha.

If that's the only thing that's changed, then that's where to look first.

Sounds like an odd one though. Was there a big temperature difference between then and now? As Tony's said, you've still got a gun that's putting out useful hunting power, so don't worry too much.

Hope it works out OK, mate.

Cheers.

Not sure whether it would affect power but you can get 5.51mm and 5.52mm pellets in .22 AA field, obviously 5.52mm would be a tighter fit in the barrel.

You havent maybe had 1 of each tin?

Id go back to a tin of the first lot you tried and see if anything as changed. I dont mess about with cleaning or lubing my pellets. Ive a s410 and i use 5.52 straight out of the tin. Not found any difference in performance through last 3 tins of them and theres about 500 in a tin.

If you still have problems with the pellets, then id get the power adjusted slightly. If its set up right you shouldnt see much difference in fps through several pellets.

All I did was wash in soapy water, then hair dryer on kitchen paper and a very quick pass over with wd40, giving just the lightest of coatings to the pellets.

Ah, never use WD40. It's too flammable, you'll end up dieseling and ruining your consistency. Only use an inert oil, such as the Napier pellet lube.

As for washing, are you sure they were properly dry? An hour or so at vry low heat in the oven is probably the best bet. Trying to wipe them dry or use a hairdryer is a recipe for leaving water in the skirts, which again will ruin consistency!

Thanks for the advice and thoughts chaps, Ill go back to square 1 and get some fresh slugs, running low anyway. Im going to get a tin of AA diablo 5.51 and 5.52 for comparison, as the groupings with 5.52 at 45m were around 1.5"ish and I was expecting much tighter groups: Diamonds are 1", squares are 1.5"

Thanks Bob, thats interesting, Il bear that in mind if they have them in stock at my local shop, I did try some Premier ultra magnums - 14.3 but they didnt give very good groupings.

Cheers though for that, its always interesting to hear what slugs are getting the best results with their particular rifle.

Cheers

mark......i wouldn't worry too much.....it is running very consistently

1 ft/lb at the muzzle....equates to approx 0.2 ft/lbs at 35 yards.

so......its better to be on the right side of legal in my opinion.

and wd40......is a no no......dedicated pellet lube is the thing to use.

or prefferably dry pellets.

cheers

Funny things, airguns...

From what I've read on here, most of the lads who use a 4** whatever seem to say their guns shoot best with the AA Fields.

My 410 shoots well with them but it shoots better with H and N FTT's and Logun Penetrators.

Maybe give them a go too?

Cheers.

LOGUN PENETRATORS run out!

ACCUPELL'S run out!

i done a chrono test on both rifle sunday the .22 11.8ft/lb & .177 9.8ft/lb so i wouldnt worry about your rifle being just above 10ft/lb im still getting good range shots at 9.ft/lb
