One of the best come backs in the sport of Boxing

Recommended Posts

I have lost touch with it over the past few years but I still love the sport. I've got around 600 video tapes in the loft with 1000's of fights on them, I was obsessed with the sport at one time, but getting the best to fight the best these days seems to be more of a struggle than it has been in the past.

It's true what you say about Warren, he's cornered the sport in this country. I remember Panix Promotions used to be Warren's main rival at one time, but since Lennox f****d them off, all their other fighters seemed to do the same and jumped ship.

I really enjoyed boxing through the 90's but there isn't really that many match ups that excite me these days.

Yes i can understand that....although i will say Frank Warren has been great for British fighters.

Just out of interest i used to collect a lot of old fight films myself,as you probably know Jim Jacobs who was part of tysons old team had the biggest collection in the world at one stage,it got past down when he died and his son or gr son i forget which, sold them all off....a fiend of a friend managed to get some historic old fights that are worth a fair bit now.....so a collections always worth holding onto ;)

Blimey he's done well getting them.

not a comeback but a great fight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7Rj5zSlYY4

Remember the first time i watched this fight like it was yesterday, they could of held it in a telephone booth,non-stop. R.I.P Diego Corrales a tough guy from a tough backround. The Earle v Katsidis fi

About the middle 60s,Jack would show clips of old fights, his personel top tens in all weights

It may be on the internet somewhere, there was a couple of small time boxing promoters in Leicester who i knew in the 60s George Biddles and Buddy Thomas. Buddy took me to meet sonny Listen at London road station in 68,i met Joe Bugner around the same time, both struck me as being a bit unpleasant.

I did meet Joe Bugner once not long after he moved to Oz and he wasnt my cuppa tea,but then i dont think he was anyones !...speaking of which,if im not wrong George Biddles took Jack Bodell to a British title win against Bugner ? and possibly managed Richard Dunn when he fought Ali,though i could be wrong.

My Granddad was in a boxing booth and was watching the action back in the day, and Turpin walked in. He said Turpin had two ladies with him and was dressed like a film star, real smart like. He said everyone was cheering for Turpin to get in the ring with the Fare ground fighter, but Turpin was laughing it off and didn't really want to. He was eventually persuaded to get in the ring by the crowd and my Granddad said that the Fare ground fighter was trying all he could to land a punch on Turpin but Turpin was slipping and blocking everything the guy tried to hit him with :toast: He chose not to hit the Fare ground fighter but didn't let him land a glove on him, just dazzled the guy without even having to hit him back hahaha

I can well believe it....my father would tell me many stories about him as he fought a few times on Randy Turpin undercards at the White City.Being from East London i was constantly getting told stories of fighters from these parts though Randy Turpin was one of the few ( foreigners ) as he called them, the old fella would talk about :D

DONT know how to put clips up but for me HAGLER V JOHN THE BEAST MAWGABI

John Mugabi was one of the biggest wastes of talent ive ever seen,he would have beaten Hagler in that fight if he had more belief in himself but he was a strange fella i remember seeing him at the Royal Oak gym back around 84 Mickey Duff had brought him over and he was sparring with another Duff fighter some might remember named Cornelius Boza Edwards, they were light sparring even though Boza was only a lightweight and Mugabi was light middle at the time.....Mugabi couldnt lay a glove on him and he lost his rag and got out the ring during a round.I was knobbing about on the pads elsewhere and out the corner of my eye saw what looked like a playground pile up on the floor outside the ring.Mugabi had waited for Boza to get out the ring then jumped on him when his back was turned !....It was something i never forgot,he was childlike in some ways yet when his mind was on the job he was unstoppable.

As for comebacks,Ray Mancini was a fighter i loved to watch who was in some great comeback fights, one of which tragically ended in the death of his opponent......but a great fighter to watch nonetheless.

I bet he made you pay the bill :D ....Mickey was jewish to his roots and it showed in daily life !....That said he was a very clever man and was good for the game.Their was certain things he did that were plain wrong but nobodies perfect especially in the boxing game for instance at the time of the Hagler/Mugabi fight Mickey was making great matches in the states and the type of guy Mugabi was Mickey knew he had to take the fight quick against George Francis advice.Mugabi was a lazy man who hated running,George often said he was THE worst trainer he had ever trained and was riddled with syphilis most of his career as he was addicted to sex !!...He certainly never came across as the brightest spark.Mickey knew Mugabi,s career would be short due to his lifestyle so got in quick while the money was on the table.

George told me years later he felt the Hagler fight destroyed Mugabi mentally as a fighter,Mugabi was unbeaten and cruised through fights until he met Hagler ( too early in Georges opinion )and it destroyed his confidence, which is often the case with unbeaten fighters.....sad really.

" if you wont do it for me do it for the father " :D ....remember those famous Duff words !....Mugabi had been baptised a few weeks before the Hagler fight and wanted the father in his corner.

The Lonsdale shops a furniture shop now,i suppose Denni Mancini was one of the last to have it....Beak St is all different now mate,in fact Soho in general.

For me, it has to be some of Joe Calzaghe's fights, he was reported to be the underdog in most, but the boy just kept slapping them do death until he ran out of apponents, well done Joe

Joe had some good fights, and I really liked him, but the most of his defences were the typical cannon fodder Warren serves up to his boys. He fought some right garbage, but in saying that, there wasn't really anyone about too fight for the most part of his career at his weight and to be fair you don't stay unbeaten and champion for as long as he did with out being very good.
