artic 595
In 2002 my friend ran a 23tts whippet/sal x deerhound/grey. He still owns her and is now retired on the couch. This dog is an ugly mush!! Seriously ugly, but she would catch hares during the day left right and center, and made the perfect retrieves you could ever wish for in a dog. People would comment on how ugly she looked, her size and generally talked down about her. My friend just smiled and let the dog do all the talking. Joy to watch and not only see her run, but to see the other peoples faces was even more fun! Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
Well what if I'm out lamping and I want a hare to make a pie etc why shouldn't I let my dog catch one for me, or should I buy a one that's been shot. What do you mean buy knock them off their course.? i agree mate , i do only lamp work my dog 21tts had 21 this season on the lamp and on a few sunnday morning walks this season he managed 5 off same land , i seen all sorts of crosses struggle with night time hare , some night time runs on a fit hare isnt as easy as it sounds mate if people only hunt night time they should be able to run what they like alot of the so called "hare" dogs would struggle night time with the smaller lurchers on rabbits day time running isnt the end all and be all of this sport. Any good fit lurcher will take hares in the lamp!! That is absolute nonsense what you are talking mate...A hare dog is an animal which taKES HARES REGUALARLY IN THE DAYTIME... 1 Quote Link to post

Good post Artic Back around '90 my best mate bought a pup, from a well known line of match dogs, with a view to running it himself on the big lands. Nowt to look at, the dog leveled at just over 23", i wasn't impressed, at all... Till it ran!!! Boy could it kill hares, anywhere big or small fields the dog just instinctivley knew how to run each hare, we ran it from the Lakes to Altcar estate and everywhere inbetween, it was a joy to behold, could sit behind a hare all day if need be but would pressure enough to keep 'em in the same field ( a quaility i'd need in any dog!) and had a fantastic strike. Sadley my mate never ran it as he wanted, he was killed on a trip to S.A. when the dog was 20 months and the dog went back to where it came from. Looking back, i wish i took it on but the shock of his death knocked me for six and I buried my head in my own dogs. If sommat came up like that again, i'd be on it like a shot! Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,907
Seen plenty of lurchers under 23" take hares night and day, in all sizes and types of fields. Owned a couple of good ones as well. As I said in a previous post, I'm not saying they're as hard to catch as in daytime, given law, but at night in certain areas hares can be very difficult for any size of lurcher. And I've seen and owned some very fast dogs struggle at times with them. Quote Link to post

A HARE DOG WAS/IS A DAYTIME DOG. IM NOT DISPUTING THAT A HARE EDUCATED 2 THE LAMP CAN BE HARD 2 CATCH, BUT LAMPING IS MORE ABOUT RABBITS OR CHARLIES 4 MOST PEOPLE WHO RUN A HARE BECAUSE THEY HAPPEN UPON IT/ LAMPING IS MORE THE SPEED/AGILITY & MOUTH OF A DOG 2 GET THE JOB DONE QUICKLY. HARE COURSING IS/WAS A DAYTIME PURUIT & IS BEST APPRECIATED DURING DAYTIME & A DOG THAT RUNS IN ALL GUNS BLAZING WILL HAVE LIMITED SUCCESS WHEN THE BIGEARS GO UP A GEAR COME THE TURN OF THE YEAR. Any good fit lurcher will take hares in the lamp!! That is absolute nonsense what you are talking mate...A hare dog is an animal which taKES HARES REGUALARLY IN THE DAYTIME... Quote Link to post
