what is the average height to be setting snares for hares and do you just use six strand cheers danman

 

Hi danman the snares are six strand just the same you would use for a rabbit snare,the setting height is roughly 8-91/2 inches depending on the terrain

You have to have a hell of a lot of hares for them to be damaging crops etc as their feeding pattern is different to rabbits. Whereas rabbits will munch forward in a line clearing land, hares pick at odd bits here and there. I'd be really surprised if those couple were doing that much damage, it was probably the rabbits. The only reason people seem to really have for getting rid of the hares out of season, is so that they don't get folk with dogs coming on their land in the winter.

 

Not that i need to explain myself for what i have done or the reason i have done it,but to answer your question the land concerned as a high population of hares,that are damaging crops etc plus as you say come winter everyman and his lurcher is on the fields after them, as they can be seen from the road,they leave gates open and basiclly just become pains in the arse,its hassle the farmer does not need or want,he does not want every hare killed its about control.

Mate . . . . didn't mean to offend, i don't really agree with snaring a hare, but understand that its a bit ludicrous and is based upon personal feelings etc. The reason i asked was just that i was wondering if it was because of the dog men. As it was this time of year, and the photos were on grass, i assumed that was the reason . . . . .

Complete novice at snaring, but wondered how do you tell the difference between a hare run and a rabbit run when planning snare placement.

The corn is not been cut yet the farmer gets the combine ready then it rains i will let you know when so you can come over,patience my dear boy,and DONT bring that f@cking spade .See you soon

Hares are definately on the increase now that certain pesticides are banned but with the increase comes penalties .3 hares eat as much grass as a sheep in a day and the undisirables in the lurcher world cant resist a run on the stubbles which in turn leads to other misdemeanours if left unchallenged .Sad fact but hares DO need some form of control as i will no doubt get told soon as we are alive with them now .Leveret survival is at an all time high due to the increased fox control since the silly hunting ban .I love to see them but in moderation like everything else .
