Guest Hedgehunter
Meat most of the time with biscuit used if needed a couple of times a week.It depends on the quality of the rubbish (as my butcher calls it)that I'm given, sometimes its too far gone even to cook, but its free so well worth sorting through.Tree rat is my ferrets favourite they go crazy for it. bill88 6
Each to there own,i feed mine dry food with a bit of fresh meat once or twice a week.My ferret's are in tip top condition. When i first started keeping ferret's,25 yrs ago,i fed them raw meat, and although they did well on it,the dry food's are more nutritionally complete than just meat. Most carnivore's feed on the innard's first, and that would contain a fair amount of veg and cereal.jmo Quote Link to post

Guest simonw
It has been interesting reading different peoples views on feeding their ferrets, but nothing made in a factory can ever be better nutritionally than the natural diet of a carnivore and that is complete animal matter, you see it in dogs, birds and yes, ferrets. They thrive on them and its very good for ferrets that have lost weaght ect. Now saying this, its not everyday they get them, as they are not cheap. :11: simonw, spot on sir. Frank. Easy, polecat's in the wild would be lucky to see there 5th birthday, yet there's record's of domestic ferret's living well into double figure's.I would agree, fresh meat is more natural, but at the end of the day dry food has everything they need.I know lad's that keep racing greyhound's,and they are all fed on dry.I'd love to have the time to shoot/net enough to feed my ferret's and dog's on,but as good as i am to my animal's,i need to go to work to feed my wife and kid's.At the end of the day,it's personal choice,if i thought feeding dry was no good for my animal's, i'd do sommat about it.As i said jmo,not saying i'm right or wrong. Kay 3,709
My ferrets get nothing other than what they are supposed to eat , no milk no eggs no crap Ferretlove can you tell me why eggs and milk are a no-no....i give mine eggs now and again and they love them. Why are eggs 'crap' ? I'm just curious because i've always given an odd egg as do most other lads i know. I didnt say eggs are crap, i should have worded it better milk goes through them so i choose to not let them have it, i dont shoot so i cant get birds , i do feed rabbit & chicken & very occasionally chicks, they have access to dry food 24/7 & water. What i ment by crap was the ridiculas amount of rubbish being sold on E bay suppliments & such stuff we sadly live in a world where a ferret is skinny if it weighs less than half a stone, fats ferrets are unhealthy ferrets in my opinion & fit for nothing, as most pet ferrets are kept in the house they seem to be treated as extentions of the family, theres nothing wrong in giving your ferrets a good diet & a good life but feeding such crap as chocolate covered raisons & yoghurt drops isnt my idea of ferret food. i blame the fluffy american ideas that have become the norn sadly Edited December 4, 2006 by ferretlove Quote Link to post
whin 463
i met a hywel many years a go with a dark brindle dog collie heeler cross in blairgowrie and he was welsh etc any way , any way ferrets for me are working animals like my dogs , if i had to rely on dry food i would be wondering what the fech have i got them for ,as if i stopped hunting tommorow for some reason ,there would be no toothed animals left in my garden, a ferret free and dog free life , if i cant get fresh meat i get cheap mince , phesis from my mates etc , ive got a few freinds that are butchers who i used to do biusness with, you can pick phesi up for cheap etc better than dry food etc , i think dry food is a last resort but ,you have to do what right for you all the best Quote Link to post
Guest Jane Russell
I read somewhere that ferrets can't tolerate more than 4% fibre in their diet or they get digestion and intestine problems. Seems sensible and economicical to feed them what you catch. Jane Quote Link to post
