If you do have an accident and cut the nail to short and it starts to bleed have a bar of dry soap ready and scrape the nail down it and it will stop the bleeding instantly. Agood tip given to me of my vet that works.

Hi Watchman,

Got Whippet X Beddy, as soon as I get the clippers out of the dog cubboard she is off over the garden fence :wallbash: .

You may laugh but what I do now is take her in the shower  get her all soaped up and then get the mrs to cut them works a treat  , don't fancy holding up a Bully cross with long nails in the shower thou  ,

I would be suprised if filing would be better if you have a problem holding the dog for clipping. Clipping is quick but filing would mean holding the foot for a longer period of time.

If it is becoming a serious problem i would get someone to help you, i'd sit the dog in the "sheep shearing" position and hold out the 2 front paws and get somebody to do the clipping, you could get the back feet done this way as well.

I know some dogs get a phobia type thing after someone has clipped their feet badly i.e. cut the nails too far, so for those type of dogs a file may work better as you cant accidentally hurt them like you can if they squirm with the clippers - which only makes them more paranoid.

One of mine (who is also scared of carrier bags for some reason??) hates having her nails clipped, so i will file her nails now if they need doing. Although i try to make her ware them down herself to make my life easier.

i have yet to have a dog that has not willingly let me cut their nails, until now that is lol,ok i get round it but what a bloody drama, its got to the stage now i have to put one slip round her head to a post the other round her body and away we go but f**k me you would have thought i was trying to amputate her bloody toes the way she wriggles, always let her sniff the cutters offer a few tasty treats plenty of encouragement and i have never cut to short as to cause her to yelp so guessing i have not put her off in that way but she defo not up for it,actually turned into a two man job at times, any of you lads/lasses have the same trouble and how do you get over it.

yes she does get road work but i prefer the long country walks so not ideal for keeping them down to the extent where they never need doing,so come on give me a good tip, other than getting someone else to do it

ONCE THEY ARE CLIPPED,USING A FILE EVERY CAN MAKE THE QUICK RECEDE, BUT ITS TIME CONSUMING. GOOD ROAD WORK HELPS KEEP THEM DOWN,BUT WHAT BENEFITS A DOG MORE? ROAD WORK OR A GALLOP ROUND THE PARK. BLACK NAILS ARE A TOTAL KILLER. I BOUGHT A DREMEL ON ADVICE & MY DOGS WENT LOOPY WITH THE NOISE & FRICTION. TROUBLE IS THAT THE NERVE IN THE NAIL IS ACTUALLY COVERING A BONE WITHIN IT& CUTTING & SPLINTERING THIS IS NOT ADVISABLE. FOR SURE THE CHANGING SEASON PATTERNS OF A DRY EARLY SEASON & THE GROUND FREEZING LATER ON MEANS WE ALL HAVE 2 TAKE MORE CARE OF OUR DOGS FEET.

I am not sure if ye all know this lads, but when you have pups, you should clip their nails back at least once a week, this prevents the quick growing to long. I know one bitch and the owner rarely cuts the nails, and the quick is gone so long that it is a big bloody ordeal when the owner finally decides to cut. Its best to regularly clip the nails

i think my dog has that exact problem,i did not get her till she was about 6 month old and the quick is long behind the nail, hence i can only ever just nip the ends off, interesting to know
