watchman 256
i have yet to have a dog that has not willingly let me cut their nails, until now that is lol,ok i get round it but what a bloody drama, its got to the stage now i have to put one slip round her head to a post the other round her body and away we go but f**k me you would have thought i was trying to amputate her bloody toes the way she wriggles, always let her sniff the cutters offer a few tasty treats plenty of encouragement and i have never cut to short as to cause her to yelp so guessing i have not put her off in that way but she defo not up for it,actually turned into a two man job at times, any of you lads/lasses have the same trouble and how do you get over it. yes she does get road work but i prefer the long country walks so not ideal for keeping them down to the extent where they never need doing,so come on give me a good tip, other than getting someone else to do it Quote Link to post
MoChara 1,632
If my dogs are in need of getting there nails clipped (which isnt often thank god), i let them into the living room and when they are relaxed id go over and just hold his paw and stroke him then just snip one at a time nice and quickly, if he tries to get up i stop and tell him to lie down and do the same over again. It can be a pain in the backside but patience is a virtue Nicole. Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,412
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dremel-Cordless-Pet-DOG-CAT-NAIL-TRIMMING-TOOL-Trimmer-/370244094547?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Gadgets&hash=item5634448a53 I got one of these when they were a bit cheaper and its good for dogs who don't like the clippers, just let them have a sniff and get used to the noise. You'll probably be able to find a cheaper one somewhere online. Quote Link to post
Neal 1,857
It's not so much the cutting, as getting them to stay still while the nail varnish dries. Quote Link to post

Lab 10,979
i find a file does the job better no hassle good answer mate never thought of that cheers I would be suprised if filing would be better if you have a problem holding the dog for clipping. Clipping is quick but filing would mean holding the foot for a longer period of time. If it is becoming a serious problem i would get someone to help you, i'd sit the dog in the "sheep shearing" position and hold out the 2 front paws and get somebody to do the clipping, you could get the back feet done this way as well. stomdog 2
If you do have an accident and cut the nail to short and it starts to bleed have a bar of dry soap ready and scrape the nail down it and it will stop the bleeding instantly. Agood tip given to me of my vet that works. Quote Link to post
