Another quick early morning shoot

Recommended Posts

So, I decided to go out early this morning for a while. I had set my alarm for 3 but didnt realise the mornings weren't getting light till later since the last time i was out. So ended up staying in bed till half 4.

Zeroed the gun in the garden and off i went to the permission. This permission is sort of 3 permissions in 1. 1 part someones back garden, the other is some woods jointly owned by two houses, and the other is a field on the other side of the woods owned by someone else. I decided to spend most of the morning in the garden.

Driving up the road to where i park my car i seen around 5 or 6 running about the road, and driving by the field saw about another 12 or so in there.

I parked up and got set up in the garden for about 5.15. There was a rabbit in the garden but it seen me and was off.

So i waited fora while and after about half an the neighbours cat appeared in the driveway and hid under a bush about 15 yards infront of me, looks like i had competition. About 15 mins later 2 bunnys come hoping in and ran around the driveway. One went out of sight while the the other, unknowingly, made a beeline for the cat. I just watched intently, thinking this would be interesting to see. It got within about 3 feet of the cat and the cat pounced towards it, missing it by inches.

The rabbit only ran about 5 yards and stopped dead, while the cat turned its attention to the other rabbit, which seemed to disappear after a few minutes. The 1st rabbit was sat about 10 yards infront of me, staying still. I couldnt take the shot because 1, i wasnt confident of the hold under at that range, 2, the landowners car was about 10 yards behind the rabbit, so if i missed it would be 'bye bye permission' and 3, even if i did hit it, the pellet would probably have went straight through and scelped the car anyway.

So i just had to sit and watch and see if it moved. I wish i had taken a pic to show how close this rabbit was. I watched for about 7 or 8 mins and then grew impatient. I started to move about in the hope the rabbit would move to a better place so i could take the shot. It bolted to the left and i made a clicking noise with my mouth to see if it would stop, and it did, well within range (what a great trick btw, i read on this site about making a clicking noise to stop a rabbit, and its worked a few times for me now)So i lined the shot up and pulled the trigger, result - 1 dead rabbit.

When i got up to get it the cat decided it was time to go.

I waited for another 20 mins but it started to rain so i decided to go for a quick walk round the woods then go home.

Got to the woods and spotted a rabbit at the foot of a tree. Ive never really been good at stalking but gave it a go, using trees between me and the rabbit as cover, but stood on a branch, sending it running, along with another i hadnt spotted.

I decided to wait at the tree for 5-10 mins to see if anything came out. Only 2 mins later i seen a rabbit moving then went out of sight. I managed to get to another tree and spotted the rabbit about 20 yards away. Shouldered the gun without been seen and leaned on the tree, and that was rabbit number 2 in the bag. So i decided to call it a day at that.

When i got home i went to gut the rabbits, and kept the gun next to me as i had seen a few magpies arsing around and eating the dogs dinner. I had nearlb finished the 2nd rabbit and heard something move in the trees to my right, a tree rat. My dads wanting rid of these as they keep going in and out of bins and causing a right mess, so i lined the sights up and got it with a perfect head shot to end the day.

You learn Fast John and your putting the accuracy of the S200 to surgical use :notworthy: Well done :clapper:

Nice write up as well.

Now depending on where your Primary Zero was depends on how much hold under/over you give a target at that close range.

My Baby has gone back to a primary zero of 35 yards and if that close bunny had been in front of me the POA would have been lamost exactly as it was at 35 yards  My secondary zero is at 15 yards to exact dead centre of the target; so anything between 6.9 yards to 11.6 yards gets the crosshairs exactly where they usually go and more or less the same between 32yards and 37 yards

Whats your Primary zero and whats your output on the s200?

Thanks Phantom.

The primary zero was just 25 yards as i wasnt going to be shooting much further than that in the back garden. Dont really shoot further than 30-35 yards as of yet, well not on living things anyway.

I just got my battery for the LRF (cost me 6.99, robbing b*stards!!) so hopefully tomorrow will get a mess about with it and sort out my ranges and mildots.
