dogs-n-natives 1,182
I used to keeper a hill that was rife with adders in summer. The first season a labrador was bitten while picking up ducks, he was taken to the vets with a large swolen leg. Next day given all clear, but then suddenly died of kidney/liver failiour couple of days later. My sisters patt was bitten and she had to do mouth to mouth 5 times till she got anti-venom into it, but shes a vet and wasnt far from her practice. My old terrier killed a few, and luckily never got bitten. The last to die was the shepherds collie from a neighbouring farm, was simply found dead in the morning after being out late gathering the hill, swollen face So yea they can kill dogs, but id guess a fit dog could also survive if given the correct treatment, personally I keep em off the fells all through the summer and in general any that you meet by october are sluggish and not a major threat when hunting. Scruffy 6
I knew they were venomous but like i said , 2/3 seconds and it was over. i think i`ll keep away from there for a while anyway. I `d hate to lose a dog that way. Quote Link to post

dytkos 17,793
My old girl got bit a couple of years back and it cost me about £70 for a course of treatments at the local thiefs, I mean vets. She recovered OK. I now carry a few allergy relief tablets (Piriton or similar) in my phone case when I go out. Cheers, D. Quote Link to post

Jordb543 9
As far as a native adder's venom is concerned its not too bad tbh around as toxic as a bee sting, however they obviously deliver more then a bee can, and like with bee stings an allergic reaction isnt uncommon, so i would say its definately a vet job, or hospital job if you or the dog get bit, its not too dangrous unless an allergic reaction takes place then it can be pretty dangerous i think. condtioning the dog against snakes may be a good idea, all mine have been with my pet snakes Quote Link to post

thesnakeman 0
Lucky you are where you are. Some years ago, I had a dog trained to find snakes (I am a snake catcher), and he was bitten by a red-bellied black snakes and died shortly after. I'm in Australia and this happened on the edge of Sydney in bush there. All the best Raymond Hoser Quote Link to post
