lurcher is driving me to despair

Recommended Posts

my lurcher pup who is 9 months old now is driving me mad,his breeding is apparently colliexgrey pointerxgrey X whippet although he looks more like he has saluki in him to me(he's got the build of one and slightly featherd ears and tail).

his obedience was going reasonably well he'd retrieve, had reasonably good recall, but about 2-3 months ago everything just changed, now whenever we walk anywhere he just fucks off he literally one day just refused to do anything for me,now he wont even sit on command wont fetch he just wants to run away or (ive tried getting him as tired as possible) just stay away, his recalls non-existent in fact even worse than that if i call him he just runs away faster.

ive tried going back to basics with him,he knows what to do but just seems to refuse, ive never hit him or knowingly been to harsh with him,im pretty much snapped now ive been out with trying to train him for 10-15 mins nearly everyday since he started acting up but ive got nowhere,

if anyones got any advice i'd appreciate it because i cant keep on like this for much longer,if he doesnt start to improve he's going to have to go.

I think what youve got is what they call with kids the terible two's.If he was mine i would stop all training for two weeks & just lead walk him twice a day for at least an hour each walk. Then start again from the begining.Worth a try.Good luck.Kev.

when i notice a young dog stating to act like this, i try an keep tellin meself it wont last for ever, an 1 thing i try an do as much as possible, is stop meself from trying to give the dog commands that i know he/she will not listen to, as to me im just letting the dog know its okay for me to stand an repeat meself while they do what they please,

if ye cant get his attention, stop trying, if ye think he aint gonna come back, keep him on lead, or a long line, an just walk a bit more,

i know it can be a test a patience, but the way i see it is, if he has learned an knows the commands, then 1 day as the dog matures he will come back to your way a thinking

dont give up mate, youll wonder your whole life, what coulda been

just my opinion on it

I agree totally...just leave it for a week or two. Some dogs do go through this stage, it's quite normal. I'd strongly advise against an electric collar...he's young and it's probably just a phase. I've known electric collars ruin a young dog.

Perseveirance and patience usualy helps a dog get through its adolecense period and some times your own demenour can make a difference and imho shock collars for lurchers is a definate no no unless it was to trie and cure an habitual stock worryier.

thanks for the tips, the shock collar is for the howling all night

Have you tried putting a massive knuckle bone in with him just before you bed him down for the night...or a hide chew, something to distract him and keep him a bit occupied?

yeah bones chew toys more blankets etc the only thing that helps is me going out and hosing him down, but i cant be doing that in the winter obviously and ive got a baby too so im up enough through the night with him without also getting up for the dog

Good grief.Does he carry on in the house too? Would he settle and go to sleep if you left him in the kitchen/ hall through night? You might find he'd be happier being inside with you...? Got to be better than the 'hosing down' nightly routine....plus you'd get some sleep.

If, your hosing a 9 month old pup down mate, no wonder he runs off ! he must hate you, tempting though it is, you need to remain calm, be his friend. Try wearing an old sweatshirt all day, rub it under your arm pits then give it to him to sleep with, it works sometimes. Lay off training for a couple of weeks, use the time to read a book on training, then start again from scratch and do it properly. You've made the common mistake of believing he's trained because he does as he's told because he wants to, now he doesn't want to , you find he's not trained at all. Mike.
