Why give Wheatabix to a pup - it dosent need it, its a pup not a human.

Simple keep them on a good diet about 4 times a day, either a proper raw diet, dry or wet food,

pick one - dont mix the raw and dry together, they digest at different rates,

it dosent matter if you can count ribs, solong as they look healthy, and are active like pups should be

they will come right in time - you have to remember pups grow in two stages, quite often

when they are in the up stage, they can look skinny, one of my bitch's looked skinny till she was around 6

she would never put weight on, i just had to except it.

Why not? :whistling:

instead of giving peices, give the full rabbit with the skin on and guts taken out and just let them tear into it like piranas, ive yet to see pups that wont devour a raw rabbit or hare given half a chance, also some bits of tripe and any other good quality meat in small quantities, if the pups have not been well fed you need to build them up gradually. good luck

its just the way ive butchered it in joints and haunches, last of last seasons, any idea where i can pick up some tripe handy?

As much fresh tripe as you like, (every wednesday) 10lb bag £3.50 Antrim Area

Weetabix is ok ... it's a good filler and helpful for putting on a bit of weight. Not something I'd give a lot of tho, being high fiber. One of mine got the shits from it but the other was fine.

Scrambled egg with pilchards is a good little snack as well. I've switched to feeding my dogs once a day now, but sometimes after a long morning mooch I give them that to tide them over. Goat's milk would be a good thing for the pups too. Not cow's milk, that'll just give them the squirts.

Imo you shouldn't be able to see ribs in pups that young tho, and I think you're right to try to fatten them up  I would give about 4 meals a day, tripe is good but variety is important. So, add a bit of lamb, beef, etc. Most pet feed places sell it, PAH carries it, or you could ask your butcher what he does with his waste scraps 'cause a lot of them will give it to you for nothing. Also, regarding raw and dry .... I used to feed those separately but now I don't. My dogs have no problem digesting a bit of biscuit with their raw mince.

Where'd you get that from RFYL? Is it from the butcher? Looks fair good

Tripe does ming tho doesn't it? I've got a mate who does it herself, I don't know how the hell she stomachs mincing that up. Makes me gyp, I have to feed it outside and stand by with a big tin of Oust  It is helpful for weight gain tho.

You say you have wormed them. Are there any signs of worms present? Another dose could help if they have heavy worm burdens.

Tripe is really good, but watch that, too much fat in the diet can be bad too. Watch the appearance of poos. If it lightens alot in colour and appears 'greasy' then cut back on the fat.

Eggs, scrambled or raw, canned fish - sardines, pilchards, tuna....

Am a big fan of goats milk for pups, much prefer it to synthetic copies. You can buy it easily at supermarkets now, aim for full fat stuff. Weetabix is like rice, can be a good filler but no dietary substance, but easy on the tum too.

Chicken with the skin. As already said, some good raw lamb, and, or minced beef.

Assume royal canine maxi junior you are giving? Do the pups always appear hungry and clear their bowls? Don't be worried of adding more feeds a day if you think they will eat it. You can always drop that down again once they are at a weight and condition you are happy with.

Do they sh!t normal? A good dollop of live yoghurt could help settle stomach bacteria to aid digestion.

At the end of the day, if they are happy, playful and bouncy, they can't be coming to much harm.

Yea h pal thats correct. The slaughter house in question is used by farmers from all over the country.. And a lot of the offel from the warehouse is actually sold to places in ireland. It also helps me gain alot of permission around the country when the chat with a new farmer swings the slaughter house way...

Because there is no nutritional value to it at all, why give something that has no value

unless of course your just trying to save money,

in a dogs diet they do not need grains and wheat is one of the main culprits of skin problems in dogs.

This business about not feeding dry and wet food together is a complete hearsay fallacy which has been repeated parrot fashion for a few years now.

I bet you or anybody else on this site will not be able to show me one ounce of scientific proof the back it up.

People have been feeding meat and mixer for donkeys years without problem, bones take longer to digest than flesh.

Dogs are advanced mammals not bloody earth worms.

right, i bought 2 lurcher pups approx 9-10wks old 1 week ago, ive wormed them, and they have a constant supply of royan canin, supplemented with raw rabbit pieces in the morning, ive never had any bother getting weight onto any of my own pups but these are too skinny for their age, the dog pup more so than the bitch pup, they are predominantly whippet with about 25% deerhound in the mix, it doesnt seem to be affecting them in any way but it concerns me a little that i can see their ribs.

any way i can bulk them up a little?

Hi Gem,

I find, lamb, beef hearts, or pigs/lamb hearts good, but, dont give them to much, very high iron content. !

I use Gain, greyhound 28 complete as well, find it far better for a running dogs, then royal canin. !

Goats milk is excellent...

Rabbits are grand, but as said, no fat in them much.

If you got to your local butcher, especialy one that slaughters their own meat, you can ask them for a whole big bag of scraps and bones, they will more them willing to give ye it.

Brown bread is great, soaked on goats milk!

Sardines in sunflower oil ect..

What wormer did ye use to worm your pups with?

Any thing else ye want to know, just pm me... ;)
