Took my first half cross bull to the vet for its jabs (my usual supplier was on 3 weeker in Goa), the vet looked at the chunky wrinkle headed pup and asked what it was, 'Lurcher', I replied.

'Never seen one like it she said, whats in it?'

'Dunno' I said, 'Sommat big'.

'Looks like a Gt Dane' she said.

'Thats it!' I exclaimed, 'thats what the breeder said was in it' and so, she wrote it on the card.

Bout two years later I reluctently went back to the same surgery but seen different vet.

'Buck, lurcher?' She said very unconvinced, by now he was all grown up and carried the marks of his trade.

'Yes', I blurted out, 'He's a Great Dane cross, it should say so on his records..... With Aids....and a death wish!'

She tried hard not to crack a smile but i'm sure the corners of her mouth turned slightly.

She treated him and I left, never to return!!! ;)

I had a guy "Worked in kennels, on the tracks, man and boy" tell me my greyhound was fat...

And in the street, a little kid dashed out of a shop, spotted us, did that little shriek thing they do and rushed back into the shop going "Mum! Muum!! Some kind of tiger or sunnink!"

I also get "Is he retired?" and "Is he a rescue?" and also "I had a bitch just like her" when mine's a dog. The other one, when you explain to them, is "Oh yes my dad always had lurchers, but they were pedigrees."

Mostly Irish Wolfhound( vaguely understandable as she is a d/hound x)but my favourite was with my old bitch (similar x) when I was visiting my sister in Glasgow - overgrown rat!!!! Obviously highly offended but definately the funniest so far...

Since she was small she's been mistaken for an old boy, and yes, had all those "pedigree lurcher" conversations too...mad old lady with excessively fat lab occasionally shouts "skinny bitch" at us in the street as well....
