THE GRIFF 8
There are lots of different methods and rigs to fish for pike. First of all you must be confident in unhooking them, they can make a nasty mess of you hands if you don't handle them properly. I always land pike by hand by 'chinning' them out and never use a landing net, this is because nets and treble hooks dont go together in my opinion, however this will come with experiance and would recomend you using a net to start off with. Make sure you have a couple of pairs of long forceps/pliers at least 10-12 inches long and a pair of wire cutter that will easily cut through a treble hook for those occasions when you have to cut the hook out of the fish or the net. If you have never caught pike before then I would seriously consider going with someone that has and let them show you how to hold them properly. The simplest way to start pike fishing is spinning. You would need a rod suitable for casting lures and a reel with about 15 pound line on it or 30 pound braid, and some wire traces. When pike fishing ALWAYS USE A WIRE TRACE, this stops the pike from biting through the line and ending up with a gob full of treble hooks, I always make my own traces and make them at least 2-3 foot long but you can buy them ready made that are 12-18 inches long, dont use the 6 inch ones(they aren't long enough). You will also need some lures and away you go. The other simple methods are a simple float rig using a pike float, a stop knot or float stop and a wire trace with either a deadbait or live bait on the end. You could also try ledgering but make sure you have the correct bite indication otherwise you will get pike swallowing baits and deep hooking themselves, if you have never fished for pike before then you definatly dont want to be deep hooking them because turning there stomachs inside out to get a hook out is an art in itself and needs experiance. These are just a few basics, obviously there is alot more to fishing for pike and it can be as complicated as you want it to be. I will say it again the best way to learn is to go with someone with experiance or just go down to your local pond and watch other anglers to learn the basics. Remember to respect the fish you catch and know how to unhook them properly, I see it too often when people catch pike and are scared of them, this means they are out of the water for 10 minutes before been put back in or they get left with hooks and traces still in them, I'm not saying you will do this, but just thought I would mention it for others that might.
