We have recently been blest with a lovery litter of seven pups, but yesterday morning my bitch stopped eating so this morning my mrs,s took her down the vets. The vet said she would not be able to feed the litter because she hads picked up a stomach infection and even thou it,s not a bad one it could posabley pass to the pups. What I need is some advice on how much the pups should be taking each time we feed them. I know we have to feed them every 2-3 hours for the next week and then drop it down to every 4 after that but any advice on this situation would be of extreem help as this will be our first hand reared litter.

How old?? breed of dog???? etc need to know this before telling you the wrong thing  Lamb replacement milk from a farm supplies, in a bottle or syringe keep giving it to them until they have had enough. They'll tell you if they want more

on the back of the bag it should have a guide for different animals. This lamb replacement milk is just as good if not better than the dogs milk substitutes ie lactol or skinners puppy milk

i had to hand rear a pup once, i find they pull there heads away when full, or they let it dribble out and wont swallow it. also you need to stimulate them to pee and poo as they cant do it on there own , so you need to wipe there bits with cottn bud to make them go , mum dose it by licking them .

Firstly most vets are not expert regarding the breeding and rearing of puppies, their expertise is diagnosing illness.

I had a bitch with severe mastitis on very strong antibiotics,a nd she continued to fee the pups, though they didn't; gain weight quite as well that week, soon made it up.

As long as the bitch is prescribed safe antibiotics then she can carry on feeding the pups. If she has a temperature this may affect milk production, so you need to weight the puppies and the bitch must have lots of fluids.

if feeding dry food soak it to a mush, to get liquids into her and also the food won't hurt her mouth where ti can get sore from cleaning puppies.

The tins of bitch milk replacer will give advice about amounts if you do need to hand rear or supplement.

If the bitch is not feeding them you will need to feed them every two hours day and night.

The first few days the pusp shodul be sucklign off Mum almost constantly to brign teh milk in.

Weigh the pusp, check for dehydrauion (pinch the skin it shoudl spring right back).

There are a lot of very experienced breeders on this site:http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/board/all.html you might like to seek advice there.

Get some chicken and white rice mate boil it up for about 5 mins if that, then add some peasand carrots. Then feed this to the bitch for a couple of days the blander the better it will settle her stomach and still give her goodness. We found the lactol too rich when we used it,apparently this is common so at the vets advice we used lamb replacement. If ya pups start shiiting through the eye of a needle this is why

Hope everything comes right

I found lactol became too rich for my terrier pups when they got to about 4 weeks i put it down to them not needing it as much the more they took solid food. the lurchers on the other hand did well on it with no problems.
