Planned trip went sour.

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Got the kit in the car and drove to a permission.

Little bit of wind blowing, and broken cloud, still warm.

Rested the Cannon on the fence and took a shot at a post I know is 30yds away, bang on

Began my stalk along the hedge row's towards a warren.

Moving slowly, stopping , looking , and listening along the way.

Was about 70yds from my snipe position, when a rabbit dashed out of the hedge not 4yds ahead of me, scared the life out of me :D

Got to my position.....and changed my short's :D

First Bunny appeared, and lazed at 36yds, shouldered the Cannon, and squeezed off the shot......MISSED !!

Oh well, must have made a right hash of the shot I thought, but it felt right :hmm:

Another bunny out, lazed at 28yds, squeezed the shot from the Cannon......MISSED.

Well bless my soul I thought to myself :censored::wallbash::D

I knew somthing ws not quite right here, so desided to leave the area and check zero again.

Pinned a range card to an old stump and lazed out to 30yds.

Got down behind the Cannon, settled myself down, and took the first shot....MISSED!!

I saw the dry earth at the righthand side of the stump kick up TWO FEET away.

Could not believe what I was seeing, try another shot, bang in the middle ???

Next shot....off to the right again

First thought was pressure in the rifle.....no that's was ok.

Next silencer, take it off and try a shot without it.

As I went to unscrew the silencer, the barrel of my HW100 just turned around and around, offering no resistance what so ever, very loose.

To say I was gutted was is an understatment.

I know this to be a common fault with the HW100s, as there is only one tapped screw to hold it fast.

Now Im faced with a bit of a quandry, the Rifle is still under warrenty.

It was not supplied via Hull Cartridge ( Which Im pleased about ) so it will need to go back to the factory in Germany for repair.

This will proberbly take about 4 to 6 week's

The other option is to go for a BTAS tune, and have the Rifle fettled properly.

Such a shame, because me and the Cannon were getting along just fine before this.

Has anyone had the BTAS tune done on thier HW100....if so.....was it worth it ??

Had a simular thing with the Air Ranger Bill. the barrel on these are secured by 4 Grubs screws! 2 at the bottom of the action and 2 at the top, each time I picked the gun up I would spend time zeroeing the rifle only to find the next time I picked it up the gun was shooting all over the place.

It turned out the two awkward screw underneath the action was the culprits which came loose. I finally removed the the 6 screws securing the top of the action and off it all came. the Barrel screws was then tipped with some Locktight and re-tightend in sequence, I must admit I took one look at these tiny 1/8 AF grub screws and came very close to tapping them out to 3mm Metric, if it ever goes again thats what I will do...

I have to ask Bill! why the hell don't these Manufaturers just thread the barrel so the barrle can be threaded into the action and nipped with a couple of grubs for safe measure? seems they all take the cheapest way out to be cost effective.....

as far as sending your's back mate I think I would be very tempted to take the DIY route! then again obviously the warranty will go bang when you start tampering. if you send it back they'll pobably only secure it to the orignal spec as it was when somtimes we can improve on things, the other alternative like you said is to get the gun sent off to be Tuned and hopefully some Mods done on the Barrel houseing.....

Either way pal I feel for you! these guns are not cheap for whats actually in them, its about time they pulled their fingers out with some Improvements. I know this much? go back to the 70's and earley 80's the old HW Springers and most other springers back then was built to last like brick shit houses.....

Sorry to hear about that mate

I had a similar thing happen on my S400, but the barrel had twisted on the clip at the end. As soon as i slacked off the grub screw it snapped back into place under the pressure. To be fair, mine had probably taken quite a knock and never happened again. Though, to hear this is a common fault on the HW100 is surprising - considering they are 1. Expensive 2. German 3. Made by one of the leaders in the field ??? And the same thing happened to Jasper's Daystate?!! Shocking.

I've been debating what rifle to be next; by debating i mean waiting till i can afford one! :whistling: The HW100 was up there, with the Daystate Hunstman and my boy hood dream, thanks to avid reading of the late John Darlings articles the Rapid 7. On this knowledge the R7 seems top of the pops.

Hope you get it sorted soon mate

Hi Tony.

Unbelievable and a bloody nusiance too mate.

I suppose its the world of mass production that we live in.

Having the barrel nipped into the action would make more sense mate, but as you say, cost's, and productivity take priority most of the time.

The other thing that bothers me, is, when the rifle is sent back, wether they will just tighten the screw and send it back......not an effective repair to my mind, and a waste of 4/6 weeks for the same thing to happen again at a later date maybe!!

Trouble is, if I attempt it, thats the warrenty out of the window, they rely do have you by the nadgers.

I may ask for a new rifle, because the I have been sold is not fit for purpose :censored:

Proberbly get no joy with that though.

I Think the cost for a BTAS tune is around the £300 mark, I think I may give them a bell, and discuss the fault, and ask if they are confident of curing it.

What a freakin nightmare

Hi Tris.

Cheer's buddy.

So annoying and frustrating, when I think of the time I have put into getting her right!!

I think its parr for the course these day's that whatever Rifle you buy, there may be problems, somtimes your lucky, somtimes you aint......and I aint :D

Still, never mind, all the ranting wont fix or solve the problem.

Ill ring the Sportsmans gun centre tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

DRAMA Over

I gave it all some thought, and desided to do it myself.

Screw the warrenty, and bugger losing my rifle for 4/6 week's.

While putting the loose barrel to right's, I had a good clean up in there, not that there was much to do, gave the inside of the stock another good oiling also removed the O ring from the barrel band, so now the barrel is not only TIGHT, but floating too, dont expect it will make a hapeth of difference, but thought Id try it anyway :D:thumbs:

Out later to re zero, and check her out......The "Cannon" is in full health again

Thanks for your comment's and help all.
