Had the first tentative call yesterday evening with no success at all bearing in mind i had called 3 by the same date last year .Id seen no action but the urge to try is stronger than that .Got myself into position under a bush ,rifle on sticks and wind in my face .I was sure that if a buck did show he would emerge from woodland to the side of a patch of corn but that wasnt to be .What did show was a pair of this years well advanced kids that only served to spur on the calling in the misplaced belief that the doe was off fornicating as it were .The session over, i made myself known to the pair who ran up a hill and stood shuffling .I had to go that way and came across the body of a doe ,well decomposed but probably the dam to these two kids .They stood until i was feet away and bounded into the wood and gone .No sign of damage ,probably a glacing blow from a car from the lane nearby .

Its a real shame to find a dead doe anytime but made even worse because of the time of year and as wireviz says they will struggle through the winter months, on a lighter note l was out for a stalk last sunday, l dont normally call untill l see hard evidence the rut is on but decided to try a call, l did this over a period of about 1/2 an hour gave it another 1/2 an hour nothing showed so decided to have a look elswhere but with no more calling, as l was walking down the hedge from my chosen spot a good young buck came out of the wood and made his way strait to where l was calling l gave him a couple of toots which got his attention, he was not in the cull plan anyway so he lives for another year. I carried on with the stalk and was greeted with an idiot dog walker letting his terrier chase hares about the ground but did manage a young munty buck at last knockings so all was not lost.

Thats a shame I had a similar thing happened to me five weeks ago, I had seen this nice big Roe buck not a great head but big in stature and in great nick ,I had seen him on three occations and thought right saturday morning ill go out and try for him before he buggers off .

Saturday morning up a darkaclock into the landy and off park up in the field next to the big house and off i go glass the field where i have seen him nothing on the next line of trees he often feeds along nothing ,into the landrover and just i pass a field entrance there he is hit by a car i think more likely a van or something biggish as he had been dragged along the road a good few yards the hair was totally rubbed off one side antlers were broken legs brocken ,i think the car or van must have had a fair bit of damage underneath going by the state of the Buck .

Carried on looking about but only saw does after that went home very pissed off.

But i will be back again in a weeks time to see what I can see.

Good luck Hoolit
