lurcher shows - dog judging

Recommended Posts

Ive been to a couple of lurcher shows over the last 12 months and havent yet got my head round what the judges look for in the ring.. seems like comparing dogs is like comparing screws with nails...both are useful but do different jobs... with all the different mixes out there how can one be compaired with others on looks lone?

i was wondering if anyone knew what the judging cirteria is?

would be interested to see what the views are out there on HL

At lrelands country fair and the same ppl have won it past 2 years its a joke half these animals have never seen a rabbit or worked in a field till te truth there fire places dogs as l call them but as most ppl said you need to know who is running or you your sticking the purple headed womb warrior into one off them.

And the racing is even funny full breed greyhounds with out stamps on there ears winning the racing but all in all good day out for the family and the shit talkers so l fit right in

at the end of the day if i was judgeing i would be looking at;- good conformation, good free movement ,good condition;- not too fat/thin/ good coat condition, fit for purpose, correct scissor bite, balanced temperament (not aggressive or too nervous), personally it wouldnt matter to me if a dog is marked or not, colour and markings.if it is male that both testicles are decended (apart from pups)

when you judge dogs you judge each animal individually, if its possible to follow a breed standard then you do so, in the case of working dogs you cant always do that.

I think the dog should be judged on condition , confirmation , good feet , a good healthy animal should win !!!!!!!! Iv been to a few shows this year and some off the dogs being shown are in shit condition ,

winning lurcher at Lambourn, good conformation, good feet, healthy, she won champion lurcher saturday because the judge liked her.She came second in her class at worcester on Sunday to a brindle, because the judge liked brindles. Its all down to what the judge likes on the day mate.

we went to Wortley show on Sunday and i was thinking the same thing, dont get me wrong the dogs that won looked fit and healthy, but how you can tell without seeing em run i dont know. Just enjoy the day and some times you might get lucky and get a nice pretty rosette!

A judge wraps the tail up and under the belly as some old lurcher folk believe that if the tail meets the spine this is the correct length. A working lurcher needs a good length of tail to allow ease of turning and balance so that it does not overrun, or fall on turning. There are other ways of measuring the tail, such as pulling it down towards the stifle, so it is judge's preference. On the day, the dog should be fit, healthy, good confirmation and have ring presence, however, if you are lucky enough to judge a good show and you end up with 8 really good dogs in the final, then it will come down to judge's preference.
