desertdog 149
it was all free back in the day man,i never got any permission until i was till older, no thats wrong we had mr sheriffs as i said, but i did,nt really get anymore till later in life, never bothered with birds, just bunnies, birds are grief as far as i knew then, too much hassle. i know two lads who got battered by the keepers for being greedy and stupid they ended up in hospital and in court for their troubles, me and my old mate would go find a hare, lamp or ferret, if the dogs caught a bird it was a bonus, went early did what we wanted and brought the gear home and never had a problem, but not everyone thinks like me and the places we went got hotter through dik eads goin on the ground, coursing and making a nuisance, not dog men, just men with dogs, ive a friend down in herts, that had a natural hatred of keepers and he would go and shoot birds for the devilment, old mr seymour never had a quite life, its very esy to make enemies if your a poacher or keeper, i dont think there is any romance about a poacher, he was looked on as a rouge and a thief, and that aint good, good poachers were very seldom seen and talked about evenless. good thread this has been. poacher3161 1,766
This is a fascinating subject, from my own experiences I would say the most important elements to a poacher is good recce of the land, and knowledge of the keepers habits and weakneses. My personel favourite is just a red beam and a airweapon, even a decent airpistol. easily pocketed and descriet.A starry breezy night, and a nicely populated roost. Of course these days with a large amounts of very docile birds its a lot easier than the old days. Mordern times has brought the heavy tactics of the gangs etc. True poaching has lost its romance,is that the right word? Not sure. Just a brace for the pot. Thats me lot. Just a brace for the pot !!!! I suppose that makes it OK then ?? What a load of drivel spouted on here sometimes ! We have everything from Wannabees to Grizzly Adams it seems ?? I reckon we would be lucky if 5 % of you were poachers and the rest chancers !! In my opinion a real "poacher" certainly wouldnt post anything on here ! Very very true if i was bang at it like years ago i would never come on an internet forum talking about it but i am not botherd about talking about past exsploits:thumbs:

If you'd seen the bath filled with silver fresh from the river, pheasants at £2.40 a cock £2.20 a hen Hares £4 Roe £perlb with pluck still in not £1. a Kilo empty. I could go on but need a few birds now for a pint never mind pay bills.

Guest LancsUK
Small bedlington cross lurcher / ferret and tackle. They are obedient and good bushing and rabbiting dogs and small enough to hide down in cover when the 'Keeper is about. It does trick with me anyways
