bendrover 556
how long rest do you need to give for a broken toe? still walking him on grass on lead, toe still swollen any advice to speed up recovery????????? if its actually broken, then you will most likely need to have it removed.if its dislocated and has popped back int place and is well swollen, leave it be.total rest for 3 weeks then light walking steadily building the walks up for another 3 weeks.after that try the dog off the lead for a light run.if all goes well ,start getting the animal fit.atb benny

poacherkev 64
if its a outside toe leave it on because it will still help by taking some of the strain off of the others this advice was given to me by one of the top greyhound vets ( mr sweeny )as my bitch broke 2 in her life and it never gave her any problems and she was worked hard..you will need to rest the dog for about 4 to 6 weeks with no work or walks total bed rest.. hope it works out for you
captainpugwash 2
very good advise poacherkev although if it is a outside toe you may problems with it healing properly, as it does not have a toe either side of it to keep the broken toe in place and if this is the case and it keeps occuring try going to a well known running dogs vet and try getting it pin fired my mate has had great success with this very recently hope this helps
collie/grey 238
My bitch broke her outer back toe last season, it took 4 weeks of no exersize at all then 4 weeks lead walking then built upto regular exersize, it's the collousting that takes time, are you using any bone eradial on it?? Heres some pics of my bitches break. Runs perfectly fine on it now no probs. Edited July 18, 2010 by collie/grey

captainpugwash 2
yea your right bender, we got told its a 70/30 chance depending on how and were its happend in the toe, but in my opion id rather waste £ trying pinfiring rather than taking the dogs toe off then finding out that the dog realy carnt turn anymore. collie/grey 238
Well my bitches toe has healed exactly the way it broke, it healed naturally, nature takes it course, she had no pins, nothing and has had no problems with that toe ever since but to look at the x ray you would think so. Just shows how good my vet was!
