The bitch is only 9 months old & it is still only July FFS. Wait til the fields are cut, work on her basic training til then & I bet if she hasn't seen another rabbit til then she'll be a diff

when you next run it only slip it on the rabbits you really think it has a chance of catching ones that are sitting well out on the lamp or better still take it ferreting and allow it to mouth a few i

My lurcher pup wont kill. she gets up to her quarry and then she dosent seem to know what to do. She is nine months old and very timid. Someone has suggested putting her with a rat. Any ideas anyone?

i would not encourage on rats until it has been started on the bunnies will only promote a hard mouthed dog imo,its just a pup mate it will soon get the hang of picking them up im sure,be patient, bit young for my liking to be running quarry yet anyway but that's another story.

once established on the bunnies then you can turn it on other quarry they aint stupid and learn easily the difference between something that bites back and something that does not, don't want a dog killing bunnies anyway if you ask me,retrieve live to hand is something i all ways try and strive toward but each to their own as it aint always the way things turn out

dont worry about it my lurcher bitch was doing the same thing a few months ago when she was about the same age, so i give her a few sesseions on the lead watching more experienced dogs, then soon enough she squealed a rabbit and she let it go, but she hasnt let one go since.

i put a topic on here about it at the time, listen to watchman he gives good advice

Hows the pup bred, collie, whippet or what, Will she pick up at all, or is it the action of putting her teeth into something that she wont do, work on her conifidence, get her something to tug on , a furry toy or tug toy, encourage her to bite and tug on it, its the biting action that she is withholding,, think about a timid dog , not wanting to do any harm, she needs to learn to let go a little, Dont whatever you do , go anywhere near rats with that bitch,, best of luck,,

"She is nine months old and very timid". There lies your answer Mickey, some pups are ready to start at that age and some are not, it sounds like your bitch isn't. Give her another 2-3 months and you mind find she's a different bitch.
