Is there a reason you have opted for the tactical type of rifle?

Both of the rifles you have listed have a good pedigree and both will be accurate, however I would suggest that you go down the gun shop and handle the rifles, if you haven't already.

You could also look that the Remington LTR & SPS and also the Sauer SSG or even give Andrew a call at Rifle craft and see what he has laying around.

I settled on the Rem 700 SPS 20" barrel, only because of maneuverability in high seats and woodland but had I of been shooting more on the hill I would have gone for a Remington PPS or Mannlicher SSG, just watch out for the 26" barrels :)

unless your of a good solid build and not scared to hump the weight the trg would be a no no for hill stalking... although i do hump about 13 1/2 lbs myself...

i'd also suggest you handle the guns you like the look of, and add a few lb's on for scope, pods etc....

rem 700 is a solid performer, as is tikka, sako,

hope you get sorted out...

I don't know what kind of stalking you'll be doing but even a small amount of walking about with a tactical set up will get you down (lenghth & weight)let alone if you you've got to drag/carry a deer any distance with it.

Can't go wrong with Sako the 85 is great, the only Steyr I have experience with is the Pro Hunter which I have got on well with in the past.

Why not compromise with something like the Scout which is supposed to be light and short but with some tactical features or perhaps a Sako with a fluted varmint barrell.

The other thing at the back of my mind is I personally would not like to be walking around the countryside with something quite so 'sniperish' I think it projects the wrong image just my personal opinion.

It looks fine, but that too has some weight in it with that barrel, used one, was very accurate but too heavy for me!

The TRG is far more of a military looking tool, and heavy as well!!

Fine if you like heavier guns, and all plenty accurate enough, just too heavy for me!

Sorry John I meant the Steyr SSG & Alpine and the Sako TRG , you've got a fine looking weapon! ;)

I guess it's all down to taste. The Steyr SSG is the classic all time counter sniper rifle in my opinion. If you want to go down the tac rout then you could look at classic Parker Hale kit as well. Mauser modifications are also worth a glance as is AI if you have the funds.

The reason I finally gave up and purchased a Remington 700 was due to the ease of buying after market modifications. I have an AI style stock on the way.
