Square meshed gate net

Not strictly long netting, but with nowhere else to put it I am posting it here, please feel free to move if you think it is not eligible.

Yesterday I was bored out of my skull, so I made up a traditional square meshed gate net. Just because I had not made one before. The net is 12.5ft long and 5ft deep.

Making the net was not plain sailing and a few problems had to be overcome. A chat on the phone with Netrigger with a few ideas bounced about and this morning I managed to sort the problems out.

I set the net up on a gate to see how it hung and to my untrained eye it looks alright. One problem, even after setting the net up for the first time, I saw is that the wind can play hell with the nets, there was a good breeze of 15 to 20 MPH blowing from the field to the gate and it was lifting the net up. I think it should be made with perhaps a heavier twine, I used 20/24 spun poly. Or use it with less wind.

The good part about the net is that it folds down quite small and you would be able to carry two in a jacket pocket easily.

Being able to fold them up into a pocket was the gate nets greatest advantage .Many moons ago when I was a kid the local "lad" who always seemed to have a hare or rabbit for sale made his own from what can only be described as 2 ply hemp (in fact spools of it were pinched from a shoe & boot factory ;)) but it was tremendously strong and wieghed almost nothing, he also made his long nets from the same stuff . He gave me a long net and I wish I still had it, still it was a long time ago .

OVER THE YRS I MUST HAVE MADE A 100 OR SO ..... STILL GOT HALF A DOZEN ANDS YES I STILL USE THEM , MAINLY AS BACK UPS ON SMOOTS TO THE STYLE G.W. SHOWED ME ......

I ALWAYS KNIT THIS TYPE IN SQUARE MESH , I PREFER WAXED IRISH LINEN , THOUGH THE MODERN SPUN NYLON IN A HEAVY TWILL IS A GOOD SECOND ......

I LIKE TO SET THE NET OFF THE HEDGE IF I CAN AND PULL THE BOTTOM BACK THAT WAY THE HARE GOES WELL INTO THE NET BEFORE IT DROPS

ALSO I PREFER A DEEPER NET THAN 5 FOOT ......

ALL THE BEST
